Solid State Statesmanship!
Having been a member for a little over a year, DIY Audio has been a fine place to learn more about audio, and learn how to build stuff, you know, do it yourself. A lot a fine contributions. However, there seems to be an escalation in poor manners specifically here in Solid State. So poor, in fact, that it is a big turn off, counterproductive, and potentially turns any thread into the personal battleground for a few contentious fellows. Moderation must be stretched pretty thin. Moderation also doesn’t seem real consistent across the team, and at many instances in this last year, I’ve asked myself why a poster was allowed to make such a rude post at another members expense in a public forum. The unfortunate rule to winning these contests of will with another person are to more thoroughly humiliate, and to be as rude as possible without crossing over to such an extent that you would be outright banned for life. In the absence of swift and certain action by moderators at specific posts and posters, the quality of the solid state forums is really at question. I pick a thread to browse, and before I know it, it turns personal, and ugly. I forget about the electronic topic the thread is about because of the rude comments, contentiousness, ego, ad nauseaum. At any rate, these forums are really ours, if you think about it, and we need to voice our support for more civility if that’s what we would like. I really want more professionalism in the context of how members treat one another. This isn’t a dormitory, a bar, or a lynch mob. If I never read another post designed to stroke the author’s ego I would be eternally grateful. For those members too tempted to belittle, disparage, impugn, or otherwise post in a fashion that is not intended to benefit the forum as a whole, I want swift moderator action. Otherwise, the understandable urge to defend one is too strong, and before long the discussion drops off the ledge into the gutter… I’ve built 2 amplifier from these forums, and they’re the best I’ve personally heard, and I use them everyday in my studio. There are a couple more I wish to build. I am very grateful for the posters who offer their amp schematics, and their very real toil, trouble, education and experience for free. To these creators and contributors, I tell you—you are what’s right in the world. You have tangibly made the world, if just a tiny bit of it, better for me and I thank you. In the same spirit, I encourage others here to treat one another better—because it is the right thing to do. Brian |

Well said Brian!
I've just recently joined, but I've already received some helpful advice from generous and knowledgeable members. I don't know anyone on this forum, but having read some of the more "crazy" OT rants in the last few days, I was beginning to wonder if that kind of banter was commonplace. It would surely be more beneficial to all if people collaborated and shared ideas with respect, rather than contempt and conceit. As a beginner in the world of DIY audio, I am humbled by the wisdom and experience of many of the members on this forum, and I'm also gracious for their willingness to assist. I hope that those who feel the need to be nasty will rethink their attitudes and remember why they got into DIY in the first place. I know I will be enjoying this forum for years to come, and I hope those members with bad blood can work out their differences in the near future, for all our sakes. Here's to keeping with the spirit of the DIY community. Cheers! |

Not being a moderator, but as a normal member for many years, I understand your feelings.
However I think these internal Please remember that this type of forums always will be mix of ordinary diy'ers wanting to learn, big ego's and "I know better" types. Also differences in ages sometimes causes these problems. There are many elderly members (like my self), who are brought up and "thought to speak politely to each other", and youngsters who just push on with no repect for other members. I may suggest that you do like I have done in the last years. If a thread gets personal or there are to much Also a little hint sent to the moderators can sometimes stop a thread going wilde

please notice a couple of things
---- people like nelson pass , john curl, anatech , DJK, carlos destroyer x , quasi , Andrew T and many many others real experts with many amps working with their help and design ..... simply spare or bother to spent a lot of private time for this comunity .....Actually me and many others we have to wake up in the morning and PRAY to see a new post , a new answer , a new schematic from these people . ----let us not forget that all this advicing and all this help is simply given for free . ---- then you need in a way to seperate forum users that take the schematic/answer/advice and study on it , construct ,make mistakes , improve , learn from the all procedure ...... and the other type of users that would like the diyaudio.com to be better called fast food audio.com ..... so simply they are just here to pick up a quick solution ----(in a similar greek forum that is related to electronics its a silent rule that people that only look for fast food solutions are simply ignored ) beyond that in every public forum epect that you have variety of users some of them studends some of them legends ..... some of them very fat ......some of them comercial minded and goes on and on ***expect aditute from all of them ..... i find it very reasonable ***epect titans to fight eachother *** epect dinosaurs to also fight each other i also find it very reasonable for example there is forum members that have amazing theoretical and mathematical aproach ....an amazing ability to analyze circuits ...... BUT NEVER CONSTRUCTED ONE AMPLIFIER !!!!!!! from their point of view to criticize and analyze other peoples DREAMS make them feel god !!!! ok ....then .... we may have to cop with that and respect forum memebrs for everything they are !!!! regards sakis ( priviliged to be a forum member ..... forum to me is family .... forum members were informed of my son's birth before relatives ha ha ha )

a copy of the real world.... there are a lot of personalities, characters and type of needs around us in our neighborhood All them playing their theater.... exercising their best values... sharing their things, helping or not helping.... ones loves to be under the spot ligth..others to behave alike bomber...well... some of them are walking encyclopedias, ..other are Calculating machines.... and some are Doctor Self representatives..the ones use book references. The most interesting is that we have very few DIY..and the forum is a diy forum...this is what i feel strange observing. Freedom..... result of free forum...moderators does not make intervenctions about the stuff posted... they do not ask for DIYers and discourage other kind of guys, the theorists (do nothing real). Also forum management (their policy) is not to protect any forum member...so... an idiot can bother Nelson Pass..one of our more eminent guys...this discourage people to contribute, as no respect and protection is guaranteed.... Nelson Pass has, inside the forum the same value Sakis..and this is absolutelly non sense..he has not the same value...NEVER!..and by any kind of point of view he is alike others. The forum, is following its own destiny..there are not too much Dyers around the world.... and as the forum is free... this was not selected..no filter was used..so.... the forum is representative of our society... a do nothing society... a brain storm society. I have a DIY group into Orkut.... in the beginning they were around 600.... then i was asking pictures to see if they build things.... them i remove 560...now we are 40... and we all assemble things...all advanced amateurs.... theorists, artists, bad boys, powerholics, people without basic know how..all them was banished... they can read all stuff, and watch and copy 7 thousand schematics and images posted there, to share tutorials written, to copy them and use them..but they cannot post there..if do not build..then be reading and do not disturb...this is my orkut..there, the rules are mine..... in our forum...rules are from the management..so...they are different. There, the message is: - "If you have nothing productive to do, them go to a cinema and do not bother us" regards, Carlos

But i really think forum is not the place to those things...i would like a place to do that... "The battlefield arena" I really think forum should create the "arena" place for us... when we want to discuss with someone..some personal strike or anything alike we may move to that "Gladiator Arena" and them to say what we want to say... something open to forum folks, and not readable by the internet. Then, if people has some personnal to discuss..they can go to the arena..the ones loves figths, will go to the "arena" thread to be following the contentious and to support one or other and produce the mess they want..keeping forum (as something open to the whole world) rid from these things. You know...that idea that we must solve our problems at home..not to turn them public. So..wanna figth?...have reasons to figth?.. then go to the correct place and figth. Sometimes we have to figth..this is unavoidable..so... a place for that purpose may be very interesting... i have already three to invite to the box ring. regards, Carlos

We cannot ignore, that we can love one each other, also, that sometimes we also figth one each other when needed..this is the human nature. Here is a picture from the Greek ancient martial art. Greeks are the base or our civilization, they were not considered barbarians. regards, Carlos

Thank you all for the thoughtful posts. We are well aware of the possibilities to improve this forum. Lack of time (we are all volunteers) is sometimes a problem.
I'm closing the thread, I've got an amp to build... /Hugo |
