I have this amp and I am wondering if by looking at the design, you could tell if it is a good design and would be a good candidate for use. It was working but the preamp is now lost. My next question is: How can I determine the connections (ins and outs)? I am a newbie. Well not too new but I have not been actively studying and doing my homework.

What a mess - is that a commercial amp or home-brew?
Seeing that mess I imagine your electronics knowledge will be in good shape when you have succeeded in fixing that one. Have fun, Hannes

Looks like a tube amp from the bottom and as if the designer had a capacitor fetish. Is it a stereo tube-driven SE class-A transistor amplifier? Or are the transistors only used as voltage regulators?
The first step should be to draw a schematic, if you don't have one. Going by the photo only tells us that it is old and that the builder prefered point-to-point over PCB. That could of course be a sign of the times, when it was built. There might still be a good design behind it, even if it is not good-looking. If you post photos, they should be at least big and sharp enough to recognize all components. Looks, like some quality components were used, while the transformer says low power.
