Default Rotel RB1080 - Injured, needs consulting specialist

Hi all

My Rotel RB1080 power amp is injured and needs help. She powers up and the protection light goes out so all seems fine until I try and play any sound. The right hand channel is dead and the left channel makes some strange popping and clicking noises, but the protection circuit stays off.

I'm a newbie to electronic repairs so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
Marco

Hi again guys, no-one want to help? Please help with some advice, etc. I've searched the web for schematics and service manuals but to no avail. If anybody has the above manual/schematics please mail me. Thanks all!

Check it's not simply that the relays are damaged

Thanks Jaycee. How do I test the relays?

To be honest, if you need help with doing this, keep well clear of the inside of the amp. Sorry to sound elitist, but high power amps are not to be trifled with. You will save yourself more money and from potential harm if you have it serviced by a 'pro.

Hi Jaycee, thanks. I'm really keen to learn to diagnose faults. I have a basic idea of what to (and what not to) touch inside the amp. I also understand how relays work. Would it be as simple as playing a sine wave thru the amp and measuring the output from the relays?

And we can assume it's not the pre-amp or CD player right? You can get a service manual right from Rotel, but diagnosing a power amp is not the place for a newbie to start. Just my .02

Thanks Vargas. I've tried several sources and I know the cd & preamp work so it's definitely the amp.

I could only find the technical manual for it, and it doesn't say what to test or where to start.

I always seem to pick the hard ones to start with - sumthing 'bout jumping in the deep end!

Relays - pull them out and measure contact resistance. It could simply be the contacts are tarnished and not making proper contact.

If you've got an oscilloscope you could play a sine wave into it and monitor the output on both sides of the speaker relay. if the popping only appears after the relay, you know its the relay.

Maxi , What exactly happened for the amp to come into this state, was there a short on speaker terminals, change source while amp is on, maybe dropped some liquid on it, started doing this after playing at high volume or parreled many speakers to the output ? This will help to determine whats wrong, anyway the first thing to do is check the fuses, open her up and have a look. If any are blown dont just replace and power up, they blew for a reason and it could do more damage. Then look for anything burnt. I dont know this model or have schematics but it is possible that the power light will come one and everything look normal but the amps protection fuses have blown. The protection circuit is not always powered by the same lines as the main amp and its possible theres even a second small transformer for this.
