Default HPPA amplifier (Bert Molenkamp)

Hi~
I'm going to build this amplifier as my project in school.

The circuit designer Bert Molenkamp is also the designer of legendary Mark Levinson No.23 power amplifier. (he did mention in the introduction, but i'm not sure also =D)

Specifications HPPA
(power supply + / - 45 Volt (@10Amp); 4 * 64,000uF)

Maximum output power: 100 Watt RMS, 1 kHz sine wave, 8 ohm
200 Watt RMS, 1 kHz sine wave, 4 ohm
680 Watt RMS, 10 kHz square wave, 1 ohm

Frequency range: 10 Hz .. 250 kHz, sine wave, 100 Watt, 8 ohm
(input base resistor 27k//220pF, to prevent amplifier from slewing)

Slewing Rate: 90 V/uS (sine wave, f=500kHz, P=50W, 8 ohm)

Damping factor: 2000 (100Hz, Ro=0.004; Rload=8ohm)
(DF=Rload/Rout) 1300 (1000Hz, Ro=0.006; Rload=8ohm)
400 (10kHz, Ro=0.02; Rload=8ohm)

Peak output current: 60 A (limited by fuses in PSU lines)

Here's my questions:

1. Anyone build it before ? How's the sound ?

2. Is it a good design ? (specification so pro)

3. Why he use the regulator IC for the input stage ?

4. Can i use normal capacitor ? (my place hard to find MKP capacitor)

I've search the forum but less information about this amp
Hope someone pro can help me before i build it
regard!

-flacer

4. you can use a _bipolar_ elco if you wish
3. to get lower rails (lower dissipation in frontend), to avoid ripple bleeding into VAS...
2. maybe I'm missing something, but my short look didn't cause any sparks of enthusiasm on my side
1. dunno

Have fun, Hannes

Thanks for answering my questions.

Anyway i will try to build it with electrolytic bipolar capacitor

regard!

Hi~

thanks for the help

yes all these information i already read through
the circuit diagram also from the original websitehttp://www.arky.ru/audio/shem/hppa/hppa.htm

I'm interest in this circuit because he said that:
"I attempted to make an amplifier that could catch up with the best transistor amplifiers in the world. My great example in those days was the legendary Mark Levinson No.23 power amplifier."

LOL~!
but seems less people build this amplifier
previous i only build some IC base amplifier
this my first solid state project
just hope to gain some knowledge from who know this circuit before i start

p.s. sorry English not good @@

regard!
