Lightbulb A ...carver Question ....

THERE was a lot to talk about carver stories ( some of them where actually very nice ) ...the fisrt steps of bob with the analog switching between voltage ....actually the first class G steps .... then the sunfire story with allthese made by digital switching psu ....and so on and on ...

brings back the idea when i was a kid to make an adjustable bench symmetrical supply for amplifier testing with a triac ( very explosive he he he )

so the question goes like that

why bob had to create the magnetic field transformer ( a transfromer that is possible to be driven by a triac circuit ) and before that why he was changing rail voltage with regulated transistors

is it possible to do that by switching the input voltage with a triac ( or triacs ) by using various windings in the primary depenting on the voltage wanted in the out ????

by this you may have something like class G or D operation but still a linear psu ....

what do you think ????

The whole point of the Field coil is that the transformer is smaller and lighter! much like a switching supply transformer. In fact it works the same way the ignition coil on a car works! apply power to the coil and the the core magnetizes, shut the coil off and the resulting magnetic field collapse produces a very large output in the coil secondary!

Default thanks

i ve never study the paricular application .... i am familiar with other carver principals but not this one ...

what do you think about the idea with the windings though ????

I think switching power supplies have come a long way since then. But Kudo's to carver for at least trying something new and being innovative! for the late 80's, early 90's this was a cool thing...never been thrilled with the sound of the amps however....

trully !!! SMPS are almost every where now days .... i wonder why i ve never seen though any yamaha comercial amps working with them and also .....can you tell me where can buy an SMPS 56+56 volts@ 4 amper or so per rail that i need for one of my amplifiers ????

There are, of course, plenty of commercial amps using switchers. As well as powered cabinets. Meyer, QSC, RCF, etc.

I have sent this link to Anatech. Hopefully he will have some time to answer your questions but please be patient, he is dealing with pain management issues right now.

Thank you.
