hi, i was giving some thought as to which capacitors to re cap my amp with, and was wondering if i was going to use any of those supposed exotic caps would they be best used in places where their directly on the signal, and just use good caps for decoupling etc? or would these exotic caps make a difference all round?

thanks

chris

Hi,
if you're prepared to buy three or four different types for each value you think are required, you can test for yourself.
The chances of someone having done the same on your amplifier with your ear's/brain's preferences with your speakers and room are almost nil.

Try buying various types of non exotics (=cheap) and a selection of bypass types and values and you may be able to come to an affordable conclusion to suit your circumstances.

This thread may give you some idea of the enormous number of combinations you may have to listen to to find those that you like.

It may be possible to glean from there some ideas and what choices give a chance of success and where to put different values and/or types.

There are similar threads for other circuit/cap tuning.

Andrew Is Right ......

small changes here and there can make a hell of improvement ....
that replacing with the same type but exotic will never do ....

100mfd with bypass 100nf very close to outputs makes serious change but then gain their ground trace/ location is also very critical

100nf bypass over the banks makes a change

some work can be done in the feedback trace ( but there knowledge testings scope and generator required )
abeetr quality but also biger or smaller value with bypass can change the all amp ....

exactly the same apply for miller caps where ever existing there a change from ceramics to styroflex or silver mika can change a lot together with the target to low if possible the value ( scope required )

finally the last couple of changes may change yor amp alot but expect the safety margin of your amp to shift ..... ( down wize of course )

other improovements
---- capacitor AC area before and after the trafo
----- capacitors over the rectifier
----- faster rectifier
-----metal film resistors
-----multiturns
-----ltp matched pair ( common heatsinked )
