Hi

I recently found my dads old Sony STR D565 in the loft. I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for modification to improve this Amp. Or if it would even be worth modifying?

Pictures of PCB layout below.

I also have a PDF of the schematic of the boards but not sure how to upload that on to here.

Thanks

I don't have an answer but another question, sorry, dannycelluk.

I was playing an LP through this unit when the sound cut out. I replaced the (blown) fuse (seen at the top-left of dannycelluk's first image, above) but the replacement blew as soon as I turned on the power.

Is this enough information for someone to diagnose the problem and recommend a fix?

list of upgrades

----take samples of electrolytics , measure for leak or drifted values and replace ...
----while replacing you may be able to use better quality ,higher temperature ,
----while replacing caps that are located in power filtering can be increased both in voltage and value ...higher voltage will provide better linearity and longer life while higher value will provide better filtering
---- replace electrolytics 2.2 mfd style with film capacitors of good quality if these are located in signal way in the input or output of various divisions like tone control ,volume buffer ,amplifier input
----if your amp features bigger electrolytics in these sections like 10 mf you may replace them with better electrolytics and by pass them down under the board with good quality film 220 nf

---- Replace trimmers for idle and offset with multi turns will provid mire accurate tuning

----replace the psu caps with the biggest available possible to fit on the pcb /bypass with 100nf film down under

---- check the front stage of the amplifier ... replace all resistors in the ltp area with 1% metalfilm of the same value

---- check if transitors used ther to see if they are perfectly matched if not replace with a perfectly matched pair ( with in the possible )

---- remove totally zobel circuit from the output relocate it on the binding post and use a separated return to ground from it .....

all these upgrades are quiet easy to make and the benefit from them is marginal .... but getting 2% from here and 3% there is quiet big improovemnt totally

whne finished you may also try to beef up the idle to a small margine to achive more temperature and a bit of more class A quality

regards sakis
