I would like to know what transistors would a hobbyist need for amps, fm transmitter, fm receiver, power supplies that would be the most useful assortment.

Hi, mcmahon... here are some inexpensive devices I have had good luck with...
Input stages / general small signal amplification (to-92).. BC556/546 good for little amps (60v) 2sc1845/2sa992 (100v) bigger amps - and ksa 92/94 (300v). all have Ft of 100mhz+ and Cob of 2-6pf (fast devices) making them useful for just about anything as well as being cheap ,$.09 to .15 apiece .Drivers/ medium power devices .. (to-126/220) MJE 340/350 - good general purpose high voltage devices, a little slow , but widely available. Ksa-2sa/c.. 1381/ 3503 .. killer VAS devices... MJE 15032/33 - 2SC4793/2sa1837 ...drivers, 2sc/a's are faster. Power devices - (to-3 / to-3p) Mjl4281_4302 / njw0281-0302 /Mj15022-25 njw0281-0302 are real cheap $1.40 ... FJL/P fairchild devices are available ,too.. Everybody seems to have a preferance , but I have noticed output device choice has little effect on sound. Most are available from Mouser , MCM , parts express. Local distributers and Radio shack suck , more expensive floor sweepings... garbage.. OS |

I quite often use RS's vero-boards and accessories for proto-typing. ![]() It depends on what level of "hobbyist" you intend to be. I use a lot of SMD parts, they are good quality and generally cheap. Some of my circuits (ex 1, ex 2, ex 3, ex 4) have a few more parts than most here would tolerate, but to each his own. A small assortment of small signal J-fets wouldn’t be a bad order either.![]() KSA2690/KSC1220 are useful as drivers, or maybe VAS........cascode. Their cost efficient too. ![]() I can vouch for the THAT corp. matched transistors arrays, THAT 200/320/340 if you can sling the price. Mostly, have fun!
