Alexander B. Bereskin 30W Transformer coupled amplifier

Does any body have experience with transformer coupled transistor amplifiers. Please see the attached pdf, and any comments on it. It will be highly appreciated if any one can recommend a better circuit with modern transistors. I am quite impressed with quality of the low frequency reproduction of a similar kind of amplifier.

I made this amplifier MANY years ago, using silicon transistors like the 2n3055 and changing the bias network. If I was building it today, the easiest way to deal with the transformers is to us a standard EI power transformer for the driver (since it carries DC), and a toroid power transformer as the output transformer.

From memory, it had a "woolly" sound, no high-frequency sparkle, and a flabby low-end.
