I am looking for a digital potentiometer design for volume control.
This design is an example of the kind of circuit I am looking for (page 5 and 6):

What I like about it is it’s simplicity. But the problem is that it lacks any kind of readout. So you have no indication at all in which position the “wiper” is after turning the rotary encoder.
Did a lot of searching, but didn’t find a design which displays the wiper setting.
Any ideas?

Using a microcontroller is the simplest way, but of course you need to be able to write code.

MAX5486 with up/down buttons has LED driver. The 5440 mentioned above uses a rotary encoder. They are surface mount, however.

you can do this with a DS1802 (Dallas Semi is part of Maxim) -- using buttons. The buttons can also be wired to a counter which drives a LED Display Driver. Search DS1802

Didn't Elektor offer a kit?
