I read somewhere long ago that some resistors on these had been undersized and were prone to burning up. I opened my own unit up and found two banks of 4 resistors, one on the raised sub-board (R111 thru R114) behind the volume pot and one bank on the mainboard (R655-R658). They are 15mmx5mm carbon type I'm guessing and they are about 15mm off the surface of the board which shows some browning, but the resistors themselves don't look bad at all and you can still read the bands. Are these candidates for replacement or does it sound like the problem was corrected--I understand they upsized the rating of them at some point so not all have this issue.

If the resistors are discolored, they're running too hot. I would definitely replace them with larger ones, considering the cost of resistors and the chance to minimize future problems, there's no reason not to.

Here is a post by merrylander addressing the issue:
http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/showthread.php?t=85661 The 15mm length would suggest I have 2W size and need to update them to 5W. |
