The first step in getting rid of the hum is determining where it is coming from.

If you plug in the amplifier without the guitar and all the volume controls turned down, does it hum?

If you just turn up the output and tone controls to their normal position does it hum?

If you turn up the input now does it hum?

When you plug in the guitar close to the amp does it start to hum?

If you move further away from the amp, does the hum increase?

If you change the cable does the hum change?

When you practice with the amp is the hum always the same?

Now is it really a 60 or 120 cycle hum or a buzz?

Those questions should narrow down what the best solution may be.

The variable resistor cancellation may be the right answer. Another method is to use balanced AC power. A filter usually doesn't work as there are often enough harmonics to reduce that you lose too much music.

Is the hum limited to a specific location? Guy I know runs a guitar shop. Has a 24KV substation feed that runs right over the front of his shop. Field is strong enough a CRT monitor halfway back in the shop visibly wiggles. I told him he's pretty much stuck with hum in his shop.
