I think derrived crossovers work for certain things really well. Like processing where you recombine the entire spectrum before the output.

But don't they swell up on the subtracted side if you use more than a 1st order and keep the signals split? Making the driver have to work harder as it gets closer to the crossover frequency.

By it's nature, the subtractive filter is flat, no 'swell-up'. This is also what I saw in my sims (over on the Carlos bi-amp thread) and I think I was getting more than 1st order (didn't measure the slope of the line though)

I'd double check that. While it is mathematically flat after you recombine the signals the subtracted FR alone will look swolen as you increase the slope of the filter.
