DIY equivalent to Bryston PowerPacs?
I'd like to build small amps for the top 3 drivers into the rear of a 5-way system I'm building. The subs will be monopole but upper bass through super tweeters will be dipole. Subs and upper bass will probably be driven by a K2 on each side.
My goal is to be able to produce 111dB at the listening position, which is 1m high, 2.5m away from source. Amplifier goals (perhaps too idealistic) are:
1. fully balanced
2. low distortion (preferably < 0.05% worst case)
3. at least 50W per channel (100-150W would be better for squawker)
4. small footprint
I've been looking at the Gainclone (especially the Gainclone-X and Bridged threads), and thinking this might be a great place to start. I'd place the power supplies in separate enclosures in my rack with power cords and Mogami balanced interconnects together in a tube out to the amplifiers, mounted to the speaker. I saw comments on the Peter Daniel thread re his Gainclone that indicate there is a need to damp these units from vibration.... Maybe they would not perform so well mounted to a baffle?
Attached is a table with some specs related to the chosen drivers.
Any thought would be appreciated.
