Default McIntosh MA-5100

Hi,
just got my MA-5100 today and have two questions about it.

a) There's a L+R Gain Control nob on the back panel. What is it for and how do
I use it?
b) Speaker cable inputs are not signed as "+" or "-". Is it try and error here?

Thanks in advance.

Regards

That is for an output to another source. They should be marked if not common is on the bottom.

Common is at the bottom and I set the "+" to them and the "-" above.
Sorry, but I've never had such connectors before
