Dual pot in a mono gain circuit

Is there any particular reason why a dual unit pot is used in a single channel circuit (gain)?
The schematic shows 10ka and the pot is a 20ka Alps which is paralleled by the PCB traces.

Can't seem to find a schematic there, but a lot of times dual potentiometers are used to form a constant impedance attenuator.

The taper is connected via the 18k resistor to the inverted input of the other half of the 4558.
I can only think that no 10ka was available and they didn't mind spending more production money.
