yamaha mx 1000 WITH TODAYS TECHNOLOGY

hai friends
iam srinivas from india. iam having YAMAHA mx 1000u POWER AMP WITH YAMAHA AVC 70 PRE AMP ALONG WITH B&W DM 320 SPEAKERS(PIONEER DV 655A DVD PLAYER AS A SOURCE).THEY ARE VERY OLD. I AM INTRESTED ONLY IN TWO CHANNEL MUSIC.
PLEASE ADVISE IF THE ABOVE SAID STUFF PERFORMANCE IS EQUAL TO TODAYS ADVANCED STEREO AMPLIFIERS? IF I BUY A NEW PRE POWER AMP WHETHER ITS PERFORMANCE IS MUCH BETTER THAN THIS VINTAGE STUFF?PLEASE ADVICE?

It depends on individual's requirement or the whole set-up.There is no such thing as "the new ones is sure better than the old ones ".So as long as they are still functioning,try to get them running.But after a while,u may want something more.

I'm only speaking in general terms here and there is always exceptions, grey areas and different uses etc. but again generally speaking IMO there isn't much that compares to the older gear in terms of build quality and sound. "Back in the day" most gear was conservatively or under rated in terms of power. Today it seems all marketing and a interpret the numbers game. The average consumer sees something state 1000 watts for example and fails to REALLY SEE and fully understand all the numbers.

So, what do you consider old? I used to perform warranty work on some of those.

Your number one overriding concern should be "how do they sound"? Replace or repair those things that do not sound good.

Bigred is correct when he implies the older mid fi stuff was built to much higher standards to things from the mid 80's on. The Yamaha was a good amp.

I agree with all the comments above.

I still use the MX 1000U as my "listening Amp". It is clean and has plenty of headroom to deliver the dynamics of the most demanding recording. I have never been disappointed with the performance or sound quality of this amp. Although, I have always thought it was just a tad soft around the midrange but this is not a criticism. The MX 1000U is easy to listen too for hours on end. I think the styling still holds up even to today. That peak hold meter broadly displayed up front still holds a significant cool factor. I wonder what an amp of this caliber would cost today.

ok now i am coming to point , the build quality and sound quality is very good of my vintage amp MX 1000U, hence i am not able to decide whether tochange it or not? in todays competative world getting that kind of build quality and clean power is very rare.
still i want to know whether any body make any comparision with todays latest amps
if yes please give me details to satisfy my self

In its day the MX1000 was and still is a good mid-fi pc of gear. What do you mean by todays technology? What are we suppose to compare the MX1000 to? What is the budget etc. Not many mid-fi companies (Yamaha, Denon, Pioneer etc.) are even producing sperates anymore and 2 channel is becoming a thing of the past. They offer integrated 2ch amps still but don't compare imo. Should I compare it to a Mcintosh or Krell or something?? IMO its a pretty vague question. Getting that build quality and clean power isn't rare its just expensive

Interesting comparison. I think it sounds better than a Krell.

That preamp is a keeper. Even without a remote.

Actually the MX1000 is the power amp and was referring to it when I was asking about what to compare to. Like I said what to compare it to? in terms of what? what does todays technology mean? I have never heard a YAMAHA AVC 70 so can't comment and especially never been able to do many a/b comparisons

Oops! I was thinking of a preamp.

The amp sounded okay, easier on the ears than the older Krells and reliable. I understand the newer Krell product sounds less "edgy".

Today's technology is advancing. Here in North America we are starved for good audio. There are some great things available in Europe and beyond. I have just connected a pair of new Cyrus Mono X amplifiers. I like them so far, but I have jammed the wires in. The speaker outlets on this first pair over here were "BFA" connectors. Normal stock now has banana jacks. These are a good example of new technology and I expect more along this line. These are linear amplifiers, not class D or any other switching type.

So, there is hope for us as a market, but only if people stop being brainwashed on multichannel. There are designers on this site that are very accomplished designers making great stuff. We have been blessed with their help.
