Making a low distortion cathode follower preamp by brute force

If you had a cathode follower with say, a largeish transistor, 1k load and 100v rail with the transistor biased to half the voltage swing, wouldn't the comparatively small voltage swings of the output signal be very low distortion because you're only using a small amount of the transistor's transfer function? In the 0.001% range perhaps?

This might be something for people who don't like opamps or lots of feedback, I don't know, I'm just musing really. The headroom would be huge and there would be no chance of clipping... There wouldn't be slew rate distortion associated with slow opamps either...

Has anyone ever tried this?
