Transformers cause a lot of distortions, so I would prefer using an amp that can directly drive the low impedance of a ribbon tweeter, without using an output transformer. Who makes such amplifiers?

A ribbon tweeter will have a DC resistance around 0.05 ohms. You can put a non-inductive resistor of about 0.2 ohms in series, accept the power dissipation loss, and use a solid state amp like a KRELL KMA100 which can drive very low impedance loads. Naturally you can use a 2 ohm non-inductive series resistor and a normal amp and accept a larger power loss. Read over the KSA 100 MKII clone thread and consider running some Spice using a +/- 5V supply on the output with a 0.1 to 0.25 ohm load. You can also go to the digital section and read over the TI xx261 digital amp thead and ponder a very low output power supply voltage, a super low impedance MOSFET(or two) and a super thick wire output inductor(or two). |
