Then when you print, select the Bullzip printer and you can select PDF, JPG, PNG, whatever. The result is a file in that format. You can then or later print it to a real printer on paper.

Edit: works with ANY program, not just PCB layout.

FinePrint is another program that acts like a printer. You can print to a bitmap, fit several pages of printout onto a single sheet, preview print jobs and delete blank pages, etc. Not free, but usable in the demo mode.

As for layout software... I usually find that starting with a sheet of paper is the best. Plan the layout, optimize some sections, then go to the computer.

better layout tools have "rubber banding" - the schematic terminal connections are shown as dynamic closest straight lines - move the the part outlines and the live "wire" connections between parts terminals stretch, snap to the least length ordering

this is invaluable in parts placement - you can see the better groupings that keep connections short, local

Why use paper with CAD layout pacages, seems a waste fo time. Draw your board outline in the ECAD package, placed fixed position components, usually connectors, then place the rest of the components in relation to the fixed position components, optimising for :
Power supply 1st,
clocks 2nd (for Digital sections)
low level analogue (for analogue sections)
then non-critical signals last
