Hey Doug. That's the way I do it. You can use ARTA to do the spectrum analysis live, too.

If you are suing your M-Audio card as the source, do a simple loop test to see what the inherent distortion is there.

What about Audio Right Mark?
Although I'm not sure that it does spectrum analysis, it does lots of other tests and if you are only doing line level tests then setup and use might be quicker and simpler.
