Modest expense REAL subwoofer.. - Click HERE for Original Thread

I was perusing Madisound's latest offerings and came upon this driver:

So I did a little design modeling..

I wouldn't recommend their design unless you are looking for an extended bass driver with poor phase character. Face it, its just not a sub.

However..

This driver is pretty nice sealed. To get better spls at low freq.s however will require room loading (specifically corner loading). (..this of course also mandates that you use it ONLY as a sub - say <38 Hz.) Additionally, to get the cabinet volume down to a more modest size you'll need to compound load it. Of course FAR better if you have more than one of these (preferably one for each corner of your room).

Phase and group delay is nice (even for a sealed design). MMs is low for its sd. Bl is strong. All of which mean that used as a sub as directed would allow for a very detailed low freq. performance that has some "slam". This should provide hallsound that would allow for a MUCH larger soundstage (..recording dependent).

what size box did it like?

Martin's 15269 (Eminence #151269) is another 15 with low fs and high (IIRC ~4.1mH) inductance

Martin 1844 ~$89 each retail

without a compound arrangement - about 7 cubic feet (200 liters), slightly more than HALF that amount with compound loading.

that gave a 1 watt/1 meter result of about 79 db at 20 Hz free field. Add another 6+ db for room gain, and slightly more than that for the corner loading, and you are looking at well over 90 db for the same 1 watt.

the real kicker is - its a sealed design and therefor has REAL low freq. extension due to only a 2nd order highpass/"roll - off" character. 10 Hz with one watt should be around 80 db.. 5 Hz - 68db. (..though its really hard to say exactly how room gain will act below about 13 Hz for any given room.)

(..and of course thats just one corner sub.)
