Old Alps pot for gainclone? - Click HERE for Original Thread
henrikwidth
Hi all!

I found an alps pot in an _old_ and broken Yamaha integrated amplifier. I was planning on using it as a passive preamp for my dual mono gainclones from audiosector (premium LM3875) Does anyone have any experiences with this pot and my amps?

Best regards

Henrik

Hi Henrik and welcome to the forum!!

It looks a lot like a 'Black beauty' except that it it seems to be for more than two channels and maybe five.
Was the Yamaha integrated a surround amp (for home cinema) or is their a balance control? E.G. Does the outside dial control channel balance and the inside controls volume.

The Black beauty is quit an expensive pot. I have the cheaper 'Alps Blue' and that is very good. I haven't tried the 'black' yet.

The 53K should be suitable. Do you know your source impedance?

Martin. :)

Hi Sonusthree

Thanks for answering!
Yes, the outer ring is for balance control and the inner is volume, The amplifier from which I got it is a big stereo amp, 30W class A or 200W class something (selectable)

Are there documentation available for these pots? I've tried to search, but my google-fu is a bit low.. ;)

I've heard somewhere before that the 'Black beauty' is discontinued but I'm not exactly sure.

I think that your pot is a probably a custom model based around the RK27 on this page:

Alps Japan Potentiometers

Google is your friend. ;)

How old is the pot???
henrikwidth
_very_ old, ill bet it's older than 15 - 20years...
The model it's from is "Yamaha neutral sound amplifier CA-2010"

here's a link for the amp: http://www.hifigoteborg.se/Yamaha%20CA-2010%20spec.htm
in swedish...

That amp looks at least 20 years old so the pot may be a little worn and noisy but there is no way to know except to try it.

It's quite easy to wire it up and test so why not make a quick prototype. It might just sound fantastic!!

Yeah.. as I said it is _old_ ;)

I'll try to wire it up, but I'm still looking for a wiring-diagram..

I know the top two rows are for the balance, but I'm not sure I'll be using that.. or..?
