BG Micro has some 12V SMPS back in stock.

I've used these DVE supplies, or ones like them, from BG Micro and think they work very well. Price is great. But they don't have many, so get one or two while you can.

They usually send gray power cords with standard North American Edison plugs. You could find a similar cord for your local power, or cut the end off and install your own power plug.

Aren't these just normal power supplies? I don't see anything about SMPS :)
BWRX
"100-240Vac input. 12Vdc/2.5A regulated output"

Ratings like these are pretty standard for switching power supplies. While it doesn't specifically state that they are switching power supplies, you can be very sure that they are.
panomaniac
Yeah, what Brian said.

They are SMPS, for sure.
robert1325
excuse me for doubting your wisdom ;)
panomaniac
;) Not wisdom, Robert. Just experience.

Nice find Michael. Those are good prices. The one I picked up locally, 12V 5A, was $20.

Yep, I love BG Micro! Prices are always great, service is too. :)

Just got an email this morning that they refunded me $4 shipping on my latest order because it all fit in a flat rate box. See why I love these guys?
Lance
does the ferrite on the 2.5 amp have any preferential or detrimental effect for this use
Thanks

I'm kind of a newb to the DIY scene. Will the 2.5A PSU work with a Sonic impact T-amp? I noticed that the stock amperage on the a PSU that sonic impact sells is 2.0A. Will 2.5A be too much?
panomaniac
You can't have "too much" amperage - the amplifier will draw only what it needs.

Voltage is what you need to worry about. Don't go above about 13V for the Sonic amps and its cousins.
mitchbyu
Thanks for the info Panomaniac. I think I'll pick one up.

I just picked up 4 of these babies - 12V, 11 amps from allelectronics.com. Overkill, I know.

I bought 2 of these. It's been burning in for a few days. So far, I'm not as pleased with the sound compared to the battery or original supply of my Trends 10.1. I'll leave it alone for a few weeks and see how it turns out.

By the way, thanks kec for the link in the other thread. I've been looking for something like this at a good deal.

Can I connect 2 charlizes in paralel to this PS?
Thanks
dweekie
There are 6 pins, three +12 and three returns. You should easily be able to connect two charlizes to the ps with wires to the pins. Again, I still don't like this PS compared to a stock Trends 10.1 smps or battery, but it may work out for you.

Thanks dweekie,
I'm ordering 1 right now. Hopefully it works well.

Oh, one very important thing. The numbering in the datasheet picture is a mirror image of the numbering on the board i received. The numbering on the board matches up to the datasheet but the picture does not. Check the polarity with a multimeter before installing.

Will do.
Thank you.

dweekie,

What is it that you don't like about this SMPS - soundwise?

Have you put it in an enclosure? Have you adjusted the trim pot to increase the voltage?

I haven't had a chance to try these out yet. I don't have the Trends amp, but will probably use these for the SI and/or Amp6.

I didn't put it in an enclosure yet. I have been running it away from the Trends amp since the amp picks up noise otherwise. The sound is just very heavy and dry. It improved a bit from the start, but every time I switch to the battery or original SMPS again, my preference is very strongly against the XP Power. I adjusted the voltage to 13.5, but I didn't notice much of a difference. I guess I just don't like the Trends/XP Power combo. I'll give a bit more time to open up....and then decide to sell it or change some caps. I did not add a stiffener cap. Maybe I should try that.

These are all gone now. I wanted them all. Got only about a dozen, they went fast. :(

I put one in a Chinese T-Amp and it sounds great! I love it! Great power, big bass, full of details and life.
Also tried it as an external supply with a Trends. Very good there too. Big soundstage, great flow to the music, an easier sounding presentation. Big smile on my face. :D

The little Chinese amp is going to my buddy Shep in France, but I will certainly build another for myself.

The supply is made by XP Power, so I am going to listen to some of their less powerful units to hear if they sound as good. Will also compare with some Skynet PSUs.

Good to hear Pano - not that they're all sold out. I may have had something to do with that :D I'm sure something else will come along.

I wonder why dweekie wasn't happy with the sound of this PS. I haven't had a chance to even try these out myself.

I have no idea why I don't like it so much either. Since I have two of them, I will have to try the other one to see if something isn't quite right with the one I've been playing with. If pano says their good, they must be good.......:xeye:

No, not at all. It is system dependent, I'm sure.

I can hear why dweekie might find it "heavy". For me it sounds fuller, wider. Of course, I have a system that can take advantage of that. Big open baffle speakers.

The bigger, fuller, wider sound is pleasing to me. There is a certain sense of easiness and flow that I have found lacking with other combos. Big orchestra classical music seems to benefit the most. Very enjoyable. All vague, subjective words - but it the best description I have so far.

If I switch back to an old Pioneer amp, the most powerful and bass heavy amp I own, it sounds dull, lifeless And not as much bass punch as the T-Amp with XP Power.

For me, it the combo works great. But you know how I am. I like an amp, even a flea power amp, to have a real sense of easy power and dynamics. And I want all the fine detail to go with it. Not asking much, is it? =)
