Recommend a UK supplier please. - Click HERE for Original Thread

Hi, I've spent a day on the net looking for a decent 12 or 15" driver to start a subwoofer project with no joy.

Can anyone recommend a UK supplier (with a decent website) of speaker components, I'm looking to spend around £100 on a driver and the same on an amp/crossover to drive it. I can build the cabinet myself but i'm not into electronics.

Thanks in advance.

Marsh.

BK Electronics is just about your only bet.

edit: Ivan also has one kit that just about fits your price range.

Thanks, BK is perfect for my needs!

For UK made sub-woofer drive units you can't beat the quality of www.shadowworks.co.uk their range starts within your budget.

Thanks all for the advice but I opted for this bad boy,
http://www.bkelec.com/HiFi/drive_un...monolith_du.htm

Sub is finished, 75l ported, tuned to 20Hz and it's just flippin awesome, better than I could have imagined.

15mm X-max. L = 1.3mH. Bl = 17.5 / 232g Mms.

@ £89 incl delivery probably a UK best buy.

Cheers ..... Graham.
Marsh
Delivery bought the price up to just over £100 but still a great driver for the price.

Oddly though BK don't list this driver on their website, I purchased it on their advice and they had to send this link via email so I could see it.
Graham Maynard
I have one of these; not on their Website either.

Just a decent general purpose bass driver. Only 5mm X-max.

I have recently completed a design using that driver from bk, i have it in a 95.4 ltr enclosure tuned around 21hz which provides a -3db of 18hz!

I must say that my subwoofer turned out extremly well and really hits those low notes with authority!

I have a couple of those too, not bad for the money. How do you know the Xmax?

Also, I believed that BK stopped selling this driver - do you know otherwise?

Hi Richie,

I should have used the word approximate. Estimated, not measured. Things stay on my computer for ages.
I ended up buying the Monacors; but other needs have delayed construction.

Cheers ....... Graham.

Hi Greg, what are you using to drive the sub?
I'm using the 300w module(MF300) with the sub controler(ASBF), both from BK.

I am using one of bk's 275w plate amps.

Il get some pics up of the sub later as well, hopefully later in the week i should be able to get some frequency sweeps up to see how the sub is preforming in room.

Great, look forward to that.

I haven't got around to painting/finishing my cabinet yet. It's not even on any feet yet. Been too busy playing with it.
When it's done i'll post some pics of the build too.

Lots of bracing plus added battons for rear and front baffles covering the joins, then I added a thick seam of wood glue along all internal joins for extra strength. Acoustic damping then added (I used foam pillow stuffing but the proper thing is better I'm sure)
larksp
yer that looks nice.

is it at all possible if u have the details of building one of these and are you having the plate amp in the box or on its own

i have the 500rms bk amp i keep it on its own small box
Marsh
Not sure what you mean by 'details of building' but I used http://www.linearteam.dk/default.as...nload=winisdpro to tune the box but it's just a rectangular box at the end of the day. If you want to have a play with the software you will need the BK-monolith driver file, i've attached it (hopefully, if it works).

Unzip and add to the drivers file in winisdpro.

Hope it works.

i will have a go. think i tried to use this once before and could never get the spec up to build the box... eg

2 at 230cm by 250

port as 2cm*10cm

and so on. ill try anyway and hopefully be ok :)
larksp
i have had a look but.....

my skills lack to be able to then make a box i need it to bring the design up for me....... with what size wood i need for each bit
not just the port length.

like your sub box the front is inside
the one i did was slot and the top and bottom was bits went over all and then front part of went nearly all the way across till it hit the side

i will show a picture so you can see

but i new what went where and how many bits of wood at each size
nice and simple hehe
Marsh
You've lost me now, I think you should start a new thread and ask for expert help with this one.
larksp
o sorry my explaining is not always that good to what i mean
i would like to make a box for the monolith driver

so more to know what box you have used like how wide it is how tall

port lenth you have used size of wood

and then if it was suitable for my room then would loves to like know all size of would but thats if u would not mind sharing
Marsh
You could copy, I mean take infuence from, the BK design, the overall dimensions are not that critical but the internal volume/port size are.
If I was to rebuild my box I would make it 100litres internaly with a 100mm port 470mm in length (almost the same as the BK)
This gives you a large box tuned to 20Hz (ish) with a large port to keep port noise to a realistic minimum.
22mm MDF braced as much as you can in all directions.

So you would be looking at a cube box of around 500mm square.

But I'm no expert.:xeye:
larksp
yer i have sold one of my JL speakers so i now have enough money just to buy the subwoofer unit with out spending anything as such and i would rather have a home sub than a car subwoofer running

i will how ever need to sort or play with the size to fit it in the room before i buy this subwoofer this is why i was asking about the sort of size

thanks
