a plea for Tubes in the shouldered style - Or Rather tubes with a "pretty" envelope :clown:
I have a very short list at the moment:
300B < what? never heard of it... :)
6AS7G < ropey output tube (:bawling: I have 5) Supposed to be a pass element
6J5G <1/2 6SN7 Fantastico!
EL37 <great, but very, very expensive
KT88 < beam tetrode, next output tube after EL34...
Sovtek KT88 <new production, non standard kt88 bottle
6L6G < seems to be highly regarded o/p tube
FW4-500 < big old rectifier tube, 500ma
6C33C / 6S33S < odd BIG bottle...
845 / 805 < as above!
Any more? (preferably without top caps! those ought to be caged, rather defeating the object)
Comments on the actual functional merits of the tubes also welcome! but in this case a secondary consideration. All tubes were useful for something.
Anyone care to add to the list?

From left to right, the KT88, 805 triode, 833A triode, 450TH triode. I apologize for the special effects. That is the only picture I have at the moment on my HD.
I have a plan to use the big 450TH on the right as a P-P pair to make a monobloc subwoofer amp, I happen to have a suitable output xfmer, a very scarce piece of Hammond iron from a WW-II transmitter. Ought to get me 1 to 1.5 kW output at 20 Hz to a 8 ohm load. Ambitious project that I have no need for. Like climbing a mountain I guess. Do it for the challenge and experience. |

For me most beautiful "sleepers" I've found:
1. GU-50 for big P-P or SE power output stages
2. 6P15P for smaller P-P or SE power output stages
3. 12L6 (or 50L6) as nice linear triodes to drive sand output stages.
All of them are very linear and very clean sounding tubes. |

OOps missed that, thanks for the pointer - some real wierd ones there!

6R7
I've got to types - one biggish almost like a 1626 (that's another nice tube) and a smallish (like 6J5). Both with grids on top.
50CA10 is a sleek a beautiful tube.
I am very fond of metal tubes - building an amp with 12A6 in full metal jacket. |

I think the 815 begs to be made into a stereo headphone amp. It would be so cute.
For those that do not know this valve, it has two plate caps placed like Mickey Mouse`s ears. |

So do I..
Whats the name of the big headed feller in front?
interesting comparison in size between the 845 and the 300b - I havent bought the OPT's yet :devilr: you reckon you could get 4 of those puppies in a normal 19" chassis?
The 845 is my current  tube. P-P linearity is better than anything I've ever seen and inspite of its DHT nature I AM tempted... (you just know reality means KT88's but still, I can dream :) )

GM100, 17V / 18A filament, 1kw plate dissipation :D.
rcavictim, there is a nice GM100 pushpull schematic on the GM70 fourm on yahoo. I was thinking about building two GM100 SET's but that would draw 40amps @ 120V so...no |

That tube looks more like a large mercury vapor light bulb for illuminating a giant factory or warehouse than a radio toob. 40 amps at 120 volts ain`t bad if you need the heat. Electric heat is 100% efficient. Unfortunately buying electricity from Ontario Hydro is not very efficient. You`d get more heat for your money if you burnt five dollar bills in a woodstove. |

I have 3 of those... i want to make a push-pull amp out of them.. the one comment i have heard about these for audio is that they are quite decent...

Dave,
How do you like your Quad II`s? Are they your main listening amplifiers? |

I sold them to a buddy a long time ago ,,, they sound good in his system (he has 4 total)

I see he likes his vinyl. That appears to be a matter of record! :D Hard to see the Quad amps but I do think I see one there with the electronics. One per quad ES speaker I guess. I see my old Empire TT there too!
So what do you use now as your main amplifier, or amplifiers if monoblocs?
I use primarily the DIY 809 SET (in my avatar) upstairs. Downstairs I enjoy my highly modified MingDa MC3008AB SET space heater (300B`s driving 805 triodes). I have several good P-P amps here that I use on occasion but my SET amps clearly sound better in micro detail. |

The Quads are right behind the ESLs (1 per speaker). He has added Decca DK30 ribbons since the picture was taken. Besides the Empire, an Oracle with a well-tempered arm & a TD125.

Of late mainly monobloks that are a variation on the RH84 (parafeed with EF86 driver) -- an excellent junk box creation (we are into them for ~$120).

Now thats a sight to warm the coldest heart! plenty of source material. nice!
a picture of my fledgeling amp is attached, not for any gratification but because you can just see the glorious 6j5g / CV1932 in the background. Unlike planet10 I never took pictures of the tubes alone - easy to rectify next time I'm home.
You'll see I'm going for tubes in a range of different styles, I have to admit the KT88's are trick photography - I only have 2! They'll be the curvy Sovtek versions ultimately.

The "Laurel and Hardy" of the tube world:
GU50 and EC52. I thing the GU50 is a beauty but the EC52 is more original and cute than beautiful.

Whats the hat on top for? |
|
|
| soundbrigade |
The hat??!! To keep the tube from freezing its ears off ...;)
The tube is to be mounted in a socket with a high collar that has a lid on top. The black "nut" on top of the tube is to help get the tube out of the socket and is screwed off when it sits in the socket. Guess the metal cap helps protect the tube from the cap and to assure that all tubes have the exactly same height. Remember that this is a HF-tube often used in military equipment. |

Just wait till I visit my mom again....
I have an old tube which looks like it has a 3 prong plug in the top, and the base is this beatifull heatsink... it has served more than 30 years as a doorstop.
Pretty sure its dead though, as my grandfather was a boffin (smart guy) with these things. |

Sounds like it may be some sort of magnetron (Radar transmitting pulse generator) tube. Magnetrons are frequently seen with their necessary magnets attached. Without the magnet structure there isn`t all that much to see. Indeed some of those make good doorstops.
Another guess would be a large Klystron, another hi-power RF transmitting type tube. |
