hi WALTER BURKHARD:

very nice case, I am also making an Pass Aleph amp. and I just wondering in your pictures, you have a half constructed chassis and a drill, do you actually drill all those hole with that drill, or you use a drill press? I am now in progress of selecting a nice inexpensive drill press.
WALTER BURKHARD
hi hc167
i use this the drill for fixing the srews. It´s impossible for drilling all this cases!!! May be u can check by Wuerth in USA to find wath u need ?????

hc167
do you mean you do not drill it yourself but have someone drill it for you? I do not understand what you mean

Very nice cases, Walter ;)

Walter, where do you get those nice heatsinks in Germany, i'm searching for a while to get them in Germany ?

thx
daly41k
Walter, excellent cases, i am trying to find some good heatsinks, I tried Fischer but I can't seem to get them to give me an estimate.
I wanted some sk 148 or 147 -400mm long so I can build the xa100. What are the dimensions of your case and did you locate the xformer in the front? I am between short wiring runs and a small as possible case or a roomier case that is easier to work in but you have to have longer wiring runs? If you could send me the email of your heatsink supplier I would appreciate it. thanks, dave

I bought some from barrredboss (user namen note the 3 r's) on E-bay. I actually have extra, but I guess I'm not ready to part with them. I just popped over to e-bay, he is still there, still has the heatsink. They are beefy--I had an 18" piece dissipating 2 X .66 amps on my aleph mini--doesn't even get warm.

Thanks Walter for the email addresses, I will check these out.

Nice cases, Walther. Did you put an older Aleph-X into those cases? Your headline made me think along those lines.

Steen:)

Yes , from Hifizen!

If you're looking for Hochleistungskühlkörper and want to pay shipping from Germany, those are great.!
EUVL
> If you're looking for Hochleistungskühlkörper and want to pay shipping from Germany, those are great.!

For those who do not understand German, Hochleistungskühlkörper means high power heatsink.

The heatsink listed in ebay are Fischer SK440. They are ONLY good if you use force cooling, as the fins are too close together, and also too long for natural cooling (flow resistance too high). Thermal resistance is quoted (as per catalog) at 0.035 degC/W, assuming a flow velocity at 5m/s (!!!) and a temperature difference to ambient at 80 degC.

I doubt many of you would want to run your heatsink at 100 degC and with so much wind noise. So be warned.

Also for anyone who is thinking about shipping heatsinks abroad from Germany, we actually tried to help a friend to order some heatsinks from a German supplier (not Fischer) and asked them to quote for the shipment to Asia. While the heatsinks themselves cost 40 Euros a piece, which is very reasonable, the shipment cost for 4 heatsinks (22kg in total) by UPS was some 500 Euros. So unless you live in EU countries, or you have friends in Germany, I think you might find it not too easy. We were very surprised ourselves how difficult it was. In the end, we ordered in Germany and shipped them by post, paying 2 time shipment cost (Germany inland and then abroad) plus 19% German VAT on top.

And if I have not managed to discourage you enough, then you may wish to have a look at :

http://www.kuehlkoerper.de/cms/inde...id=39&Itemid=87

We found them very reasonable with prices, though Alutronics has, IMHO, better technical knowledge if you need advices.

Thanks a lot, Patrick! I knew you would come to the rescue;) Heatsinks are always too small, mark my word...He-he. Mark Patricks words, heatsinks are still too small....
This doesnt help an awfull lot, but if you are in doubt, make them bigger!!

Many people like BIG heatsinks. A matter of taste I guess.

I try not to go much bigger than 420mmx50mm in section. Any length beyond 200mm (along the direction of extrusion) is not really adding value, thermally.

So what if temperature is still too high ?

I seriously considered adding water cooling (actually did), but then you either have to use running water (not exactly cheap in Germany), or use some sort of PC cooling tower with a pump (not noise free and also not really cost effective). But recently I am really tempted by these :

http://www.noctua.at/main.php?show=start

You might be surprised how much it helps, even if you run it at reduced speed (voltage), and how quiet. And at less than 20 Euros a piece, very cost effective. :)

Tom- If you couldn't find the heatsinks on Ebay via member lookup -- here is a link, since, as Patrick pointed out, shipping might be a bit pricey from Deutschland.

Just a question Walter, in the Power Supply PCB I can see two arrays of white ceramic resistors. Are they, by any chance, MPC 78 (2W) or 74 (5W) non inductive type?
If positive, where did you source them?
WALTER BURKHARD
You can buy from Bürklin or Schuro
http://www.buerklin.com/ 1R - Ländernummer 36E474 All non inductive.
