| Is there a way as in commerical amps to not have an on-off switch, but rather let the amp turn itself on and off when the ignition starts in the car? I want to do this with the AMP9 tripath kit from 41hz, but have no idea where to begin. Can someone point me in the right direction if it can be done. Thanks a bunch! |

You can replace the manual switch with this circuit. The TIP42 only has a 6A continuous rating. If you want to increase it, you can find the appropriate parts. You can use any diode for D2. You dont need the LED at the base of the TIP, but I like it because it gives you a voltage drop and a visual indicator that the amp should be on. |

You could use a Bosch type relay to switch the main power.
From the datasheet, it looks like you can use pin 6 on the IC to turn it on/off. To protect the IC, you would need to use a 5v Zener and a resistor as a regulator to drop the voltage from your head unit's remote output. |

| I was not planning on using the headunit since it is the factory head unit. My plan is to use a ipod with a volume pot straight into the amp. I wish for the the key ignition to control the on-off power of the amp and not worry about the headunit. Would the schemetic change at all? Thanks for your help in this. I really appeciate it! |

The circuit does not care where the source comes from. You can connect the remote line to the ignition. |

Just connect it to a 12v source (like cig lighter in some cars) that is on when the car is on. You don't need a seperate switch or circuit.
There are only two things you really have to be cautious of when powering the amp: incorrect polarity and over-voltage. The AMP9 can handle 27v max so there is no way you will ever fry it from over-voltage in a car, and hopefully you will get the polarity correct when you connect it.
If it makes you feel better I've done it with an AMP3 with no problems. |
