I bought this in a garage sale some time ago. I am planning to build a 12B4A or an Aikido preamp and in needs of some parts to build the PSU. This thing seems to have what I can recycle:
- the tranny - Triad R12a (550V CT@110ma DC, 6.3V@5A,5V@2A)
- the choke, Triad C-10X(9H, 250ohms, 125ma),
- maybe the "oil filled like" cap (but there is no specs).
While it is always good to save a few bucks to jump start a new project, I don't want ruin something with some value either.
Can someone take a look at the picture and tell me that I shall keep it as is or simply recycle it?

| Ah, good old Ampex. This looks like a playback amp from a tape recorder. I doubt it has any value beyond its parts. Were it mine, I'd recycle the parts... |

Same here; the parts are probably worth more than the whole and can better be put to good use.

This should build a pretty solid 5AR4 rect CLC PSU for a preamp. |

It looks like it might be a mono playback preamp. There's one input jack and one output jack. I'd keep it and try to get another one like it so you can set up an all tubed reel-to-reel tape playback system. The 6080 is probably used in regulated power supply. You might be able to modify it so you can use it as a turntable preamp, too.
Preamps with EF86/6267 tubes are usually high quality IMO.

Can you give me a model number? I have some books with tape preamp circuits in it. The schematic might be in one of them. |

| There is no model number any where. However, there is a cat-no, it says 2-30637-05, but Google search by this number didn't turn up anything. It is still in one piece because I would like to use it's regulated power supply and haven't quite figured out the schematic yet...... |

| There's nothing in Sams Photofact Tape Recorder Series Volumes 6, 10 and 11 about an ampex doohicky like that or an ampex circuit with 2 ef86/6267 tubes and 2 12AU7 tubes. You could use the power supply without taking the circuit apart. If you need to you can disconnect the preamp from the power supply, too. |
