Where to buy ICEpower amps? - Click HERE for Original Thread

Any available for sale, other than expensive PS Audio and Rotel gear? Are there any good alternative/competitive amp technologies to ICEpower?

Thank you!
eleson
I think I read somewhere here that you cannot buy ICE based amp's as diy modules.

Alternatives? Try:
www.newclassd.com
www.coldamp.com
www.hypex.nl
www.lcaudio.dk

To start with.

Thanks for the links, very interesting.

At this point, I'm actually looking for a ready to use amp, with icepower components or something similar.

This is DIY forum, wrong place to look for finished product. Try Audiocircle or audiogon. Are you willing to pay for brand name? Try Red Wine Audio. They were liquidating their Icepower 250ASP stock. All sold now but they have other models.

Alright, I just wanted to know if any DIYers build and sell their amps.

Sure they do, but you still won't find any based on ICEpower around here.

I think you might mean Red Dragon Audio. . Red Wine is strictly Tripath.

I want to made an order but after I read that I don't think so.

Why an ICEPower? You will be really disappointed when you see that you have paid too much for them, I am talking from my experience.
I was much more pleased with the quality, sound and reliability of the coldamps so I finally used them for my system, no problems so far and excellent service/support.

Best regards,
Pierre

@Pierre
Please share us your "sonic" experience with Ice Power comparing with other amps.....
Pierre
Well, to put it in a nutshell, comparing the sound of the ICEPower modules with my coldamps, I found the later to have more detailed mids and highs as well as a deeper bass. The ICEPower seemed had an overall "leaner" sound.

Other factors that made me discard the ICEPower was that they shown poor reliability, they blew up when used extensively in PA applications. This seem logical when you see the components they use, very tightly specified for the theoretical rating of the amplifier.

Another thing I didn't like at all is that it has a very very strong Zobel network, using a 25W 4.7ohm resistor, that in fact can produce more heat that the 4 power mosfets together!!! and even with this measure, they can't hold full power high frequency (say, 10KHz) output for more than some milliseconds (you can see that in their datasheets) before blowing up. This is a sign of inherent inestability of the feedback, in my opinion.

The last point that I didn't like about ICEPower modules is that they are full-bridge, so you can't bridge them for higher power (I got around 1KW with 2 coldamp BP4078 and 1 SPS80 PSU on 4 ohm).

Not to talk about several other missing features such as temp. sensing, clipping indication, and, above all, support, that is, on the other hand, very close with the coldamp guys.

Best regards,
Pierre

Hmmm ....this is a big issue. It seems that Ice Power is NOT what they intend to do....at list for big power.

But,do you consider coldamp more refine sound than UCD amps?
Pierre
Well, I have not personally compared UcD to Coldamp, but read some reviews in this forum that said that coldamp sound was "richer" and bass deeper. Anyway, I think they must be in a very similar level of performance sonically, and it is just a mater of tastes, although I prefer the greater flexibility of coldamps, that's why I chose them, in my opinion they have greater value for the money.

It seems that Cadaudio is making amp modules themselves. So i was considering: wich sounding better: one coldamp BP4078+psu SPS30 x2 or 2x Cadaudio CAD 250ASW amps? Wich would be sounding better? Not a huge price difference. At my own opinion thinking that the Coldamp's are sounding better, if you see the quality and spec's of the amps...
Anyone experiences with the Cadaudio amp's (not the Icepower's but the CAD amp's made by Cadaudio themselves)

Kind regards

Jay
ps: seems that ordering through Cadaudio is a bit problematic? Anyone suggestions?
hanswolek
Have not seen a single positive reply from anyone on Cadaudio.
Just complaints.
cheers

The Danish manufacturer Acoustic Reality (whose owner is a forum member) builds ICE-power based amps that might cost less than PS audio or CJ.

They have received some quite nice reviews FWIW. I haven't heard one personally so far however.
