Well, going through the closet this weekend found (among many other goodies, including ten Dayton Classic 12"s...why I have these, I do not know) a box of 42 NSB's, ordered right before PE ran out. I know the parameters aren't exactly ideal for a BIB, but I've had luck with them in a TL design...and I need a new project for next weekend.
I've just found out about this BIB thing, and it seems to be the new hot speaker on the block. Any reasons why I wouldn't wanna bang out a couple just for kicks? And help on the dimensions would be awesome, if I can pick the expert's brains for a few seconds. Room ceiling is 8ft, corner placement is difficult but not impossible. Music ranges from classical operas to metal to electronica, with about 60% being classic rock.
If they sound as good as everybody's saying, I plan to upgrade drivers...recommendations have been covered ad nauseum, so I don't feel compelled to ask again :D
Thanks in advance!

I don't think so. Usually, BiB's are supposed to work better with drivers of over 4" in diamter.
A standard TL might work better. Or, if you want to try a BiB, MCM sells several drivers for about $10-$15 each that are supposed to work pretty well. |

Thanks then...I already know they work quite well in traditional TL's, having built a few pairs. My objective is two-fold in this: get rid of some NSB's (atleast a pair :smash: ) and to try this BIB. If the NSB won't work I'll try out one of the recommended cheapo drivers.
Was inspired by the thread using an MCM 4.5" driver ($11? I think). If I remember correctly, some people are having good luck with small drivers.
Anybody else? If the BIB looks totally outta the question for this driver I guess I'll throw together a budget line-array since I have so many :clown: |

I might have some drivers that would work pretty well for some BiB's. Fancy a trade for some of your NSB's?
That, or I can just give you cash. (I can use the whole box!)
And a decent subwoofer driver - I could REALLY use one of those.

Guess its completely ill-advised then? I thought I'd seen BIB's with smaller, higher-Fs drivers (Tang Band W3-somethingorother)...
Anybody? *shrug* I may try it anyway, I could always try a different driver if the NSB sounds completely horrible...there's a lot of 4" full range drivers out there...and I could always make a removable baffle for driver swapping. |

From what I can remember reading small drivers with lower Fs get smaller cabinets (as the line length etc is based on 1/2 the Fs). This means that they are relatively short and so are often recommended for floor-loading (i.e. having the opening pointed down towards the floor rather than up to the ceiling).
I'm not sure what the Fs is for the NSBs but if it's similar to the Tangband W3-871s mentioned in the thread then my (definately inexpert) view would be to go for it. Hopefully some BIB guru will come along and sort this out, but otherwise posting the drivers Fs and Qts etc would probably helpmake a judgement. |

| About 110hz. |

Wellllll...they're kinda cheap drivers. I've measured Fs of my batch to be anywhere from 84hz to 119hz. If I can find a pair that have similarly low(er) Fs in the 85-90hz range, I might be in business?
<Edit> OH! and measured Qts of my batch range from 0.64 to 0.89. Published specs are Fs of 105hz and Qts of 0.76. </Edit>
Guess its time to get dirty with some math, I think I'm gonna go for it. :D
And try it with some old Radio Shack drivers while I'm at it, Mr. SpasticTeapot :D |
