Well, here's the situation.
One of my friends has been asking me for a while to think up a sound system for his truck. Now, he's got the cash and I'm trying to find something for him.
He owns a Chevy 1500 standard cab, mid to late '90s (I think it's a 98... but don't quote me on that).
He'd like a new deck, preferably one with a flipdown face plate (he likes the way it looks), and a remote control. Also, since he wants to keep the stock speakers for now, I'm adding the criteria of a high pass filter on the main speakers (which will be run from the headunit; no external amplifier unless price permits it). Then he wants to add a sub to fill in for the bass.
He also doesn't want to go for maximum SPL, but rather something he can rock out to pretty loud but sounds good and doesn't break the budget too much.
He also has a Sirius radio that he is currently using in his truck.
Lastly, he's looking at $200-300 but if he needs more, he'll pay it... but it HAS TO BE JUSTIFED COSTS.
So, my first impression was something like the Pioneer DEH-4800MP. Has the remote, has the high pass filters (I hope not just for the preouts?), but it's a little spendy for the budget constraints ($125-140).
Second, I was thinking of something like the Dayton 10" Quatro as a sub.
However, the biggest problem is the amp. I'm mainly following home audio since I'm a teenager without a car (what use is car audio? I drive a van...), so any suggestions on an amp would be the biggest help. Right now my research has consisted of ebay and looking at some MTX amps that run around the $100 range or less.
I'd like to keep it between the $200-300 for the head unit, sub, amp, all shipping charges, and maybe even the $20 for the wireing kit. However, it isn't locked in stone.
Any suggestions on hardware changes will be greatly appreciated.

This is a great head unit and it's a steal at $150:

It has the high pass filter for fronts or rears, and a sub output.
That site also has some PG amps on sale if you want to look into those. |
