FX120 BIB or Bipole - Click HERE for Original Thread

thinking of new project, my experience with the L8's are that they are good for simple music and background music, but i would like somthing a little flatter (in freq resp).

so looking out there the FX120 has a really flat response for a FR, and not too expensive.

thinking of some floorstanders either using 1 pair in BIB's or two pairs in some Bipoles (TL or MLTL etc) to get some half respectable bass from them without the use of a sub.

any ideas?

With respect

I think you need to take a chill pill and think a little harder before posting. ;) You will end up being ignored

What happened here

AND every other post you started, not having a dig but you change your mind way too quick it's hard to keep up

How about a decent pair of headphones :D

point taken

well, on the hawthorne audio forum, the guys there sudgested that the SI could possibly not work in my room, only being 10ft square, darrell himself recomended that they could not work.

too many ideas, thats me :(

Like dipoles (SI's), bipoles want to be well away from the rear wall. Another tough fit in a 10 x 10 room.

BIB's are ideally placed in corners, or at least up against a wall. From the floor plan you posted in the Hawthorne forum, you don't really have that going for you either.

I was also tempted by the SI's, but my room is only a little bigger than yours (11 x 14) and I was unsure whether they would fit well. I finally went for the Hemp Acoustics FR8DIY's. They are designed to work well in simple vented boxes (about 3 ft^3, 4" dia x 3" long port, give or take a little), will play loud on minimal power, and should hit a solid 40 Hz or lower in room. User feedback has been very good. DIY'er dmason in particular is very big on them, and he's well respected around here. They are well within your budget, too. See here for a European distributor.

Mine are still breaking in, but as the treble smooths out they are sounding very good. I feel no need for a sub. Just after I finished cutting the wood for mine, another interesting cabinet design was proposed - see the Metronome thread in this forum. Or, for even more complication, the Spawn of Frugal Horn.

You want 'dynamic and damn right fun and good value'? These might do it for you IMHO.

hi, i was recomended those a while back, do look good though, been reading up on them thisafternoon on threads on here.
the 'hempsters look good, sim'd the FR8's in WinIsd for a 85L (3cuft) enclosure, 3dB down at 44Hz, doesnt sound too bad.:D
dont really understand the "Metronomes" though...

and they are roughly the same price as the FX120's
Scottmoose
What is there not to understand about them?
inrank
sorry, my mistake, i was looking at the hemp speaker on here, and some reason though it was a metranome :(
http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/show...t=&pagenumber=7

woulnt a metranome for the hemp driver be really tall as it isnt folded like the BIB? :xeye:
Scottmoose
No, it's mass loaded. 60in tall. Not exactly a small footprint though as it's pretty wide at the base.
inrank
is that the one that is the same cabinet for the FE207?
Scottmoose
Yes.
inrank
ah-ha, just found it.

do you know how the FR8 in the metronome compares to it in a normal ported box (like the 3cuft one)?

thanks for putting up with me :)
Scottmoose
No-ones built them (I only suggested these dims a week ago!), so I've no personal experience. I suspect they'll be considerably better than a regular vented cabinet though.
inrank
fair enough :D

do you have a predicted sim of them in the metronome handy?
dmason
The Hemp FR8 has a BIG sound to it, and requires a BIG load for the BIB. In a 90L BR cabinet, unless you have a decent sized room, it can overload quite easily.... I suspect the Metro Gnome for 8 is one of the best compromises going for an 8 inch driver, and especially the FR8 Hempster. I agree that ports suck, but port velocity promises to be low here, and it is floor loaded, an okay thing in my book.

In my experience, the flared Precision Ports excel over the regular kind, or simple PVC tubing, and are Well Worth The Added Expense.

I am wondering if Planet 10 has tried his hand at phase plugs for the FR8...
inrank
how is the metro gnome different from the metronome? ;) smaller?
Scottmoose
If you read the Metronone thread you'll find the sim.
inrank
sorry, just seen that, missed that the first time :)

looks very smooth but doesnt look that impressive compared the FR8 in a 3cuft BR, but i assume in room would be adequate (10ftx10ft)?
Scottmoose
I wasn't interested in making the response look impressive; just smooth & able to couple to a room well. Maximum possible extension was not a design goal. 1/2 space FR response doesn't tell the whole story. However, a 10ft x 10ft room? Hemp FR8s? No chance, unless you stick them in an aperiodic box.
inrank
ok :( :bawling:
