My computer is whiney - Click HERE for Original Thread

I just rebuilt my computer, new motherboard, CPU and video card.

Now it's making a really annoying high pitched whine. It sounds a lot like the whine that CRT monitors and televisions make that most people can't seem to hear, but drives me batty. I think in CRTs it's the flyback transformer that does it.

I think it's the power supply. It's an Antec Truepower 2.0 450W. The thing is, I was using this power supply before and it never made this noise. But the new video card draws a whole lot more power than the old one. Nvidia recommends a minimum 450W power supply for this card.

So could running the power supply closer to its limit cause it to emit a high pitched noise? Is it time to buy a new power supply? It seems to be around 8 KHz, anyone know what a typical switching frequency for a SMPS is?

Leave it runnnig and you'll probably notice your 3V and 5V lines are nowhere close to their optimal voltages...

I just have a little 7800gt, and its killing my 400W PSU, I'm afraid these days 600W to 1kW is the PSU order of the day...
