i use a 100k pot in lack of other so my guess is that you can :)

I think its called impendance matching.... but look up a bit on gainclones and you'll see that it is not ideal... unless you want all the action in 10% of the pot's turn... which is the smallest of your problems...

Then you can add noise (I think its called johnson's something or the other) but it comes down to how higher the impedance of a resistor, the more noise it will produce...
