How many of you have made the mistake of attempting to get the truest amp possible with class d, expecting some instant audio nirvana due to a promised revolution in technology.
If you actually achieved in implementing it in a way so that the performance isn't a factor of what you didn't do, you find out fast enough that most of the old favorites are something to be endured most cases.
I think it's when you hit that point you just go looking for new recordings that might impress almost without regard to style, just need some new wow factor to appreciate in order to keep you going with it as well as justy all you've done to get it to present standard.
Thats' when I discovered soundtracks for the first time which seemingly provide a quality experience, and the kind you can really get to know how well you've arrived with, or where it needs work still.
Turns out most of that was just a taste of what can be. Today the revolution became obvious. With only the expectations at the start being to hear a new track, on the same old amp setup you've been hearing for awhile, no new tweaks ..
and out of no where just being florred by it. It .. can be described. But if you've attained "it", you're best to experience it yourselves.
I dare you, dare you to acquire a Battlestar Galactica soundtrack, crank it up to what you know is your limite of clean power, and see what happens to you. |

Hi,
Chris...
What's your findings with these tracks....New Conclusions....;)
K a n w a r |
|
|
| classd4sure |
| Not sure if there's any new conclusions I haven't really thought about it, other than it's amazing to test with. I'd like to know if anyone had the guts to try it themselves and what they thought? |

I will take the chance. I am just "getting it".
Will listen to it this weekend with our 3000W demo setup :) |
|
|
| classd4sure |
| Excellent, look forward to your reaction. I hope the version you're getting has as high a bitrate as mine .. ;) |
|
|
| ssanmor |
| I am getting the WAV version. Don't like MP3's except for long parties, etc. |
|
|
| classd4sure |
| It's just another bitrate :) |
|
|
| ssanmor |
| Yes, but no psychoacoustic modelling and audio-degrading stuff like that... Only the good old quantizing and sampling, that's all ;-) |
|
|
| RX5 |
o k chris,
got hold of the CD and played.... :) I cant quit describe what you really want us to hear or see.. but I get it! :D those silent passages and abrupt high symbals... the drums!! |
|
|
| classd4sure |
| Yep I got it for the percussion.. extreme lows, extreme highs.. and everything in between is just ideal test material. I think best heard on a very fast and transparent amplifier. |

try Klaus Schulze & Pete Namlook's "Dark side of the moog". Play the first album called "wish you were there" no 9&10. That's really heavy stuff for your system. Enormous bass and high tones. You're speakers may break up when played too loud.
For transparancy: Andreas Vollenweider's "Book of roses", no 13, and than play "Hirzel". Nice strings from the harp vibrating. |

I called all the major stores in my area, none of them have it in stock and apparently there are three different versions/recordings to choose from... So which one is it?

Hi,
There must be even a symphonic version of it by the Scottish Symphony Orchestra. Never seen it and never heard it. Very curious about that version.

Has anyone tried switching the polarity while listening to this one? In the beginning I thought it sounded a bit funny, after switching the absolute polarity, it sounds right. So either this disc is recorded wrong, or all my other discs are recorded wrong. |
|
|
| classd4sure |
You mean to say the stereo channels are out of phase?
Or is this an "absolute polarity" thing.... I'd kind of doubt either, especially the later.
Sounds awesome to me at least. |

Sounds awesome to me at least. | Absolute polarity. If you reverse the absolute polarity in both channels, there is a very distinguishable difference. It will be very obvious which the correct one is. On my system it seems the reverse of most CDs I use for comparisons. |

| Yeah, that's the kind of thing worth putting to a dbl blind test ;) |

Yep, it's pretty good. I get e feeling there is a mix of real intruments and synthesized instruments. But I may be wrong. Going back though some old recordings, the early TAS list ones still seem very good as well. |

here is another neat test.... I forgot the name of the software though... a squarewave gen.. sweep from 1Hz to 20KHz in 10 secs... on my diy ucd, i hear "whirling sound in the background".... i dunno If you got same results.. sinewave has no "sidetone" but driving it with sqaurewave does....
I will post back name of software.. I think it was TBH tone generator or TBS... ?????
note, keep amp volume at minimum...:smash: |
|

| danon |
| NCH tone generator mentioned here. |
|
|

| rx5, same here, tried it on different amps. |

yes NCH tone generator... :) thats it!!
@Bgt,
how does squarewave affect switching amps?? also got :whirling" sound on background?? :) |

classd4sure... and others.
Movie soundtracks have been good recordings for years. Harry Pearson, of Absolute Sound, has a few in his "reference recording list" or whatever he calls it.
Henri Mancini: Hatari! --a John Wayne movie with a great sound track (one of the top of my head)--African themed music.
I have a few more to add:
Vangelis: Antarctica (Japanese film), need to listen to bothsides (er.. complete cd if that's your thing)
Ry Cooder: The Long Riders (Japanese import). Very folky , simple music, even if you don't like that genre.
Steve Perrry et al: Legend , a very early Tom Cruise film, but chock full of dark, forboding and "mystical" music
Brother Where are Thou?, Alison Krauss, Dan Tyminiski, Emmy Lou Harris, Gillian Welch....need not say more, BUT all of the tracks are excellent. Just 4 versions of the same song gets a little boring (but all of them are different enough)
John Williams and the Boston Pops Orchestra : Out of This World: some of the best "space" music out there..Battlestar Gallatica, Star Wars, ET, Holst....All of them emotionally moving
So many soundtracks, so little time. oh, and one of my personal favourites--an early film starring William L. Petersen(CSI), Wang Chung: To Live and Die in LA-(don't laugh they were on the cutting edge in 1985). If ya don't know the movie, it was previous to Manhunter (Red Dragon: The Pursuit of Hannibal Lecter), from 1986 - -the introduction to Hannibal the Cannibal :dead:
so many to choose from. The great thing about soundtrcaks is that they generally are very well recorded, and make musical sense. They take you somewhere--the emotional connection is strong and is intended to be that way. |

Wilson Audio WCD-806/8419 "Discovery and Music For Christmas" is good organ music and goes VERY low if your speakers go that low.
The well known Jazz at the Pawn Shop is good for focus and cymbals, depth of image.
TAS 100 list is a good place to begin selection. Basically using music with instruments that you are familiar with are best. Go to as many variety of live performances as you can to experience the real thing. |
