No top 5. But I would look into early SS with output transformers--"tube sound" with all the benefits of SS.
McIntosh tends to bring big $. Altec theater amps look like bargains.
People often complain about harshness in early SS. It might be related to the higher THD. But that should be offset by the OTs. And maybe some more savvy person than I can replace some of the components with superior new ones.

| The '70s 'high-end' Sansuis (AU 7500 and 9500) are pretty impressive sounding, and not short on features (!), but aren't cheap these days. Radfords and the Sugden class A models are classics. |
