| I have been curious lately, as I have been thinking of the possibility that there are many quality amplifier models out there that people are upgrading from because they look old. I am looking for a system for my apartment next year, and I think one of these might be a good choice. Post your old school top 5. |

Hi,
what sort of budget are we talking about ? CD only ? or vinyl included ?

No top 5. But I would look into early SS with output transformers--"tube sound" with all the benefits of SS.
McIntosh tends to bring big $. Altec theater amps look like bargains.
People often complain about harshness in early SS. It might be related to the higher THD. But that should be offset by the OTs. And maybe some more savvy person than I can replace some of the components with superior new ones.

Check out late 70's Marantz units, Luxman and a few others rate highly in my books.

| The '70s 'high-end' Sansuis (AU 7500 and 9500) are pretty impressive sounding, and not short on features (!), but aren't cheap these days. Radfords and the Sugden class A models are classics. |
