Luxman D-105u Transport Identification - Click HERE for Original Thread
fxbill
Hi,
I have a Luxman D-105u Tube hybrid CD palyer and although the unit works great the mechanical portion of the transport is beginning to hang up when loading CDs. Sometimes the platform that raises the cd up as the door closes begins too soon and the door jams.
Can anyone tell me what transport this unit uses and possibly other players or brands that use the same mechanical unit? I'd like to replace mine and make this one reliable again.
anatech
Hi fxbill,
That is something you service rather than replace.

Also, there are quite a few adjustments that have to be made if you were to replace the entire transport.

I highly recommend you find an old Luxamn warranty shop to repair your unit for you.

Hi.

The laser unit is the SONY KSS-152A.

The manual does not give a complete assembly reference.

The exploded mechanical drawing shows a conventional setup for the drawer mech.

I would suggest careful disassembly followed by careful cleaning.
The belt drive may be slack / greasy.
the slide bars may have hardened grease.
there may be a broken tooth on the tray.

HI,
Thanks guys, but adjustment is out of the question. There are two plastic pegs that stick straight down and cam the lift plate into place. They have jammed so many times that they are bent and after working with a numebr of units in the past 40 years I have learned that straightening them will either break them off or they will simple bend back again. I can tansfer the laser system to a new mechanism, but repair of this one is a lost cause. I am equiped to do a realignment if necessary, but need to find out what mechanical unit this is.
es44
Do you need a complete service manual with detailed mechanical dis/assembly?
I've got one for Lux D107u/D105u. It quite big, approx 17.5Mb, but if you have a G-mail, it should be no problem.

Best regards, and good luck with your fine oldie :)

Ebbe

Edit: There's original parts numbers on every detail, maybe Luxman still have parts ?
anatech
Hi fxbill,
The exploded mechanism diagram is in an addendum. I doubt strongly that the new Luxman distributor has any parts. Gord from Canada is involved in the US operation. He was instrumental in destroying much of the old stock. I have little respect for him for many things he has done spanning many years. Not the most intelligent guy, but has done well for himself.

I have seen this transport used in other machines, but I can't remember for the life of me where. Is there any hope of modifying the original with screws and / or metal parts?

The last 105 I saw was a write off. Someone replaced all the caps and resistors (film caps and metal film resistors). Damaged foil, the servo's were all out of whack due to the inductive resistors. The cost of a total rebuild to erase this was out of the question. I didn't think to retain the mechanism.

Thanks guys for the help. I know this mechanism is used in other machines....and very likely in some rather inexpensive ones. If I could only find out what other makes and models use it I could simply purchase an entire unit on ebay. I treid a Maxnavox as one person on another forum had suggested, but was disappointed to discover it was not the same.... No biggy...only out $25. If sellers would show their units for sale with the drawer open I could immediately identify it since it has a rather unique appearance to the drawer...... The center of the drawer actually lifts up and raises the CD as the door closes. I've seen very few transports that do this...
anatech
Hi fxbill,
I feel for you on this. You may find this in Toshiba or Hitachi, something along those lines. I know other Luxman units used it. Timing the gears was always a problem.

Have a look in some second hand shops when you are passing by. We always wondered why Luxman used such a complicated tray assembly when most others were more straight forward.

Subject: D-105u CD drive change-out

Hi all,
So the other day, my beloved D-105u's motor died. Instead of swapping out the motors, I decided to take a drive out of my (spare parts) DZ-122.
So far, everything has operated with no problems. Thinking back, I was really (and am still) taking a risk, hoping all the specs are the same. Anyone see any potential issues I might have here?
Ian Smith Brooklyn, Michigan

Hope this is of some help

What else is inside these D-105u CD players?

I am interested to find out what decoder, filter, dac, etc it uses.
fxbill
I don't know that I can help with that, but if it is of interest to anyone else I found at least three different models of inexpensive Luxmans available for less than $30-$40 on eBay that use the exact same transport and laser assembly. It is a 15 minute job to swap them out and no adjustments are needed. Just install the several screws, plug in a couple of connectors and off you go. I bought 4 extra machines and now have a perfect unit plus three spare mechanisms. ( Of course it took getting 3 other units that I can't use as well, but it's all part of the game I guess!). I can always resell the ones with the wrong transports.

DAC B.B PCM1701P
Digital filter NPC SM5813AP

I would greatly appreciate if you could list the models you've come across with compatible transports. I have an old girl that I'm trying to get going again, and the route you took looks sensible. Being a little out of the way (Finland), I'm trying to avoid buying a lot of players with the wrong layout. BR TS

Hi Andreas,
It doesn't seem to be working, comes up as a valid link, but no file is present. I will contact ES44 directly and ask him to email you about how to get the file.

Hello again,

just finished the adjustment i found another problem, one cog of the wheel, wich i responsible for the laser unit shift, broke and some times the laser stop and jump back...does anyone know where i can get substitute?

And one more question, does anyone know the remote control code of the player?

thx, kind regards

I will try to fix the wheel know...:-)

Another like transport. Parts are N.L.A. and have been for a long time. You may find someone with parts if you are lucky.
quote:

That will vary with the make of universal remote.

Hi fxbill,
quote:

That is completely untrue! You are not getting top performance out of your machine. You were also lucky it worked so well.

Just because something works does not mean it's working well or properly. If your offsets are out, the unit may work but overheat the driver transistors. The only thing that will not be out of adjustment in this case will be the laser power, as it is servo controlled and normalized.

I guess I am concerned that you stated something as fact that you have very little knowledge of. This type of thing is what makes the internet dangerous. It dilutes actual information based in fact and misleads many other people.

Hello Chris,

thank you for your support. Unfortunatily it's not the wheel :(

I broke it down yesterday and i saw that the wheel is working, even with one cog less!

Some times the player is working perfect...i can play, i can search and and and...

Sometimes if i play a song the laser is jumping back, it plays again until the position it jumps and jump again back and if i use the search function the laser stuck

The adjustments are ok so far because when it's playing it sound great

I think something mechanical or the laser unit does'nt work correct

I order i new laser unit, maybe if i change it the problem will be solve

:)

I will write again after the change....next week because i have a business trip between!

Okay, you still need a gear. Look for the broken bit getting jammed. It may be hard to see in the grease. What I do is take it all apart and clean the teeth with a toothbrush and some cleaning solution. Then I add the proper grease for the job.

Before changing the head, take the mechanism for the head movement apart. Clean the slide rails and relubricate it. Use a tiny amount of lubricant. The head should slide freely before attaching the rest of the mechanism.

I have a Luxman D-105u to rebuild. Once I'm in there, I'll be able to give you a lot more useful information.

Finally I have received tubs for my D107. Two not expansive ElectroHarmonix to change the ones in the player since 15 years ago.

Now, the Player is in another league.

If you do not change the tubes in your D105, my advice is : go for it !
Kavouras_13
Hi everyone,

just came back from my trip...i clean up the drive and at the moment it plays ans sounds very very good...as long it's playing i will not change even the laser or the tubes...

are the tubes soldered or just stucks on the base?

Andreas
renaudagnes
The tubes are inserted on their place. It's not very easy to replace them, you have to unscrew the front plate and all and all. I will post some pictures in my website tonite...
Kavouras_13
Hello renaudagnes,

it's no problem for me to screw down the front...but are they braze on the base or just stick on it?

thank you for your time...

i change the laser unit with a Panasonic TOPH 7833 but it's not working at all

so i put again the old one :D

if i put a new laser must i change the adjustments again?

andreas
renaudagnes
If I understand your question, it's just clipped on the base.

There are some pictures on my website

There's now a page for the 105, with a very cool link where you can see the cool mods to do.

Hello,

great website "renaudagnes" are you a Luxman expert?

I will change the tubes later because now i'm more than satisfied ;)

Thank you anatech,

i thought that i must change the adjustments...at the moment the player is working very good so i will not change the unit...i spend a lot of hours to make him play like now :D

Resume: The D 105U is maybe an older one but the sound is GREAT!!!

No no, not at all. I am a Marantz Vintage expert...

A friend of mine let me the Luxman D107u for a while, because he was curious of my evaluation (I have a lot lot of gear, if I can post a picture you will see).

The D107u was not very good in term of musical production, despite a lot of technology, and the fact that analog stage is tube / transfo with no filter and no old AOP. For me the results were not enough, so I explained my friend new tubes are required.

My pure subjective evaluation, with two new matched "low cost" Electroharmonix is that we previously listen to only 10% of what the D107u is capable.

So, do yourself a favor : spend 50€ in two new tubes : it's another league.

And yes, my girl is cool, err... No I am not ill :clown:

Well the op-amp and feedback resistor are inside the DAC (see attached, the coloured area)
