as per title, mainly after female vocals, they just do 'it' to me.
my tasts are kate bush, enya, roy orb, dire straights, mellisa etheridge and a few others.

No live recordings HATE them with a passion, I want to hear music, not some yob squeeling louder than the singer/band.

Well, if you don't mind a transvestite doing "it" to you, then try Antony And The Johnsons. Their first (self titled) album is better than their latest, although the e.p. of "The Lake" is also great.

Indeed! Not to mention being mixed by a deaf sound man.

Erm, Kate Bush was on ocaukrell's list. But, I suppose she bears repeating. The new album is quite good, but it's no "Hounds of Love".

Thanks so far people.
LOVE K.B.

Tried rachelle farrell - 'waiting', bit bland. well that song anyway.
Any other kb ones I must get ;)
Will be sampling some Sia shortly (dial-up=slow)
Have no real sexual hangups so will investigate Antony.

Well, if you're feeling brave...

I don't like the sound personally, but it's worth a listen.

Made me eyes pop out that one did,.

Havent really bought many cd's over the last 15 years, so a question.
If they say the cd has been remastered (yes I know what it means) does it usually indicate an improvement or not ?
As in, should i get the original or the remastered of a particular disc ?

Just tried Sia - the bully, oh my god (boring), I will be so upset when kb leaves us, very few seem to be able to bring out such emotion and range, she really is superb.
croat47
Jazz: Astrud Gilberto and Eva Cassidy may be less main stream. Diana Krall?

Folk: Allison Kraus and Rachel McCartney (http://www.rachelmccartney.com). I also liked the stylings of Ani DiFranco at one time, but the subject matter gets repetitive.

As for live stuff, the Peter Gabriel 2-disc that came out in the early/mid 90's wasn't too poorly done.

Maybe Keri Noble?

kd lang has the best pipes in the business. "Absolute Torch and Twang" is a masterpiece.

Any of Joni Mitchell's jazz period albums (Mingus, Hissing, Don Juan...) are stupendous. As a bonus, most of those albums also feature Jaco Pastorius doing his very best work.
reverber
Happy Rhodes veers quite closely to the Kate Bush side of the road. http://www.auntiesocialmusic.com/biography/

You might also like Portishead (dreamy female vocals backed by film-noir inspired hip hop beats.)

Sandy Denny (solo and with Fairport Convention) had one of the most beautiful voices in the English folk-rock movement. There is a best of collection that is a nice introduction to her oeuvre.

http://www.sandydenny.co.uk/

...and if you like Sandy, Linda Thompson would be another voice to investigate. The work she did with husband Richard is some of the most beautiful and haunted in rock and roll.

Finally, you *must* hear Le Mystere de Voix Bulgares (get Nonesuch 79165 first - the one with the black cover. It may still be on 4AD in England?). If you are a Kate Bush fan, you have already heard a small sampling of their otherworldly sound. A trio of soloists from the choir sing backing vocals on "The Sensual World." Ms Bush has stated that their music has been known to reduce her to tears. If anyone ever has a chance to witness them live, I highly recommend it.

I'll sit back for now and wait for your reaction to these ...

Some of Sia's solo work like Rachelle Farrell is hit or miss, but her work with Zero7 is mostly all excellent. Zero7 has 2 great CD's. I would highly recommend them for chill music with classic jazz sensibility. Young or older folks tend to groove with it a parties.

Bebel Gilberto has 2 nice CD's under her belt. She is a Brazilian based in New York singer/songwriter. She also happens to be the daughter of jazz great Joao Gilberto of Stan Getz fame. As with Astrud (not her mom) has the name but also a very pleasant sexy female voice with great production values behind her. Very classy music with some of the same qualities as Zero7.

One of my all time fav female rock singers is Chrissie Hynde from the Pretenders. Her best work is her renditions of Ray-Davies "I Go to Sleep"and "It's a Thin Line Between Love and Hate". Still sounds great after all the years.

I love Peter Gabriel. I think I bought all of his stuff up to 1989 or so. If I had to choose one CD it would be "Peter Gabriel 3: (melting polaroid cover)" not too sure of the remastered version yet. I think I listened to it briefly and it was noticebly different than the original.

Re: Peter Gabriel.:knight:
I again replayed the CD's PG II & III [ORIGINAL RECORDING REMASTERED] compared to original LP recordings I have, sound as if at least half the tracks have been re-recorded and are vastly different. He must have used the master multitrack tapes and re-recorded using added/updated tracks. Most of the Fripp Guitar stuff is still retained TG. So if you are still a fan of these 2 albums, I would have to give a high thumbs up must have in your collection
SY
Oh, yes, let me also plug The Roches and The McGarrigle Sisters.
infinia
The Roches are great for testing speakers. Is not one of them (sisters) married to Fripp?
maxro
As for the remastered question, I find that they are usually louder, not better than the original CD release. (Judging mostly from some old David Bowie, of which I have both original and remastered CD.) I have the "remastered" Kate Bush Hounds of Love and it sounds like poo compared to my LP copy. I haven't heard the original, un-remastered CD to compare, though.

Portishead was mentioned. Check out Beth Orton's album with Rustin Man.

As far as English folk goes, try Steeleye Span. "Now We Are Six" and "Parcel of Rogues" are two good choices. Although, my CD of the latter could have used some remastering. There are some glitchy thumping sounds on it that don't sound like digital errors.

Oh, and here's an Antony link:

...and if you dig that Portishead->Rustin Man (BTW - isn't it Beth Gibbons who sings on these?) road, then you should backtrack to Talk Talk and then zig zag to 'O' Rang and Bark Psychosis.

Durutti Column has also made some damned fine records in their twenty odd years.

Yep, Beth Gibbons. My bad.

Talk Talk were great, especially the later sparse stuff. Huge dynamic range though, so watch out.

Ahhh... Durutti Column the most excellence and mostly overlooked

originally by Factory Records (must see film about the rise and fall of Factory Records "24 Hour Party People")
recommended starting point is a track from Durutti Column's album LC - "missing boy" was in memory of the late Ian Curtis from Joy Division.

Loreena McKennitt. Best vocalist I've ever heard. Period. Only June Tabour comes close, albeit in a very different way.

It's my opinion that a remaster is only as good as the remastering engineer on the project. It is, of course, an attempt at improving the sound of an album or simply adapting the sound for a new medium (ie. from magnetic tape to digital pcm) but I believe there is rarely an objective improvement, perhaps simply a difference.

That said, I really do like the DCC Remasters by Steve Hoffman.

Have you ever heard of ...
Sarah McLauchlan

or her first album when she was just 17 ...
Touch
Ouroboros
Or the other Canadian Goddess, Margot Timmins, lead singer with the Cowboy Junkies.
manerotony
Yes, I got The Trinity Session but my favorite is One soul now.

My last purchase: Ben Harper "Live from Mars", it's a good live cd but it doesn't convince me 100%....
Nordic
My wife and I were totaly astounded by the performance of Sarah Blasco at the Common wealth games' end.

Never heard of her before, she seems to have some small circuit releases in Australia, but I can't find any CDs by her yet in general sales....
ocaukrell
any one tried sally oldfeild ???
Scottmoose
Yes. I have her first album, Waterbearer, a compliation, and her latest from a few years back. Bit twee in many places, but there's certainly a touch of magic there too. Methinks she's a fan of Tolkien. You'd better have a system witha sweet top end though...
ocaukrell
Waiting for one of her discs to arrive (anthology i think).
Using nak 4mbs changer (modded with bbrown opamps) into nak re2 receiver feeding a pair of Troels SP95's (soon to become Ektas when i get the timber)
Scottmoose
You'll like, with that setup.
ocaukrell
Also have an aem6000 amp sitting here that I'm not using at present (space constraints :( ).

Now I've been hit with yet another delay, because the timber (veneer) is a new line they dont have it in 25mm yet.
Will be 2-3 weeks, then it gets cut, then I can do rest of the machining.
Waited four months gathering bits, another 1-2 won't matter.

AND Mrs Oldfeild's cd is on back order.....
Did get Kate bush 'hounds of love', good but not as good as ariel.
P-floyds 'wish you were here', I like very much.
And KD langs 'absolute torch and twang', do like her voice, very smooth and never over reaches her ability, when my finances recover will look at some more kd.

Keri Noble?
Mary Lee's Corvette - 700 Miles is very good, Mary Lee has a new one out on the 5th of May.
I'm hooked on KT Tunstall at the moment.

As you listed female vocalists that have a distinctive sound, here's a few more.

Otterley Patterson, vocalist with The Chris Barber Band.

Omara Portuondo, of Buena Vista Sociial club fame.

Patricia Barber, jazz vocalist.

Eddi Reader, from Fairground Attraction.

Madeleine Peyroux.
tade
I'll see the Buena Vista Social Club, and raise you Pink Floyd's The Division Bell, and Heart's Dreamboat Annie.
kurtjimi27
If you want somehting with a more a world flavor or just not "me and my piano/acoustic guitar", check out Vas or Niyaz (same singer Azam Ali, she is amazing). Also Dead can Dance who mix celtic and world styles, Lisa gerrard is amazing as well.
The more recent the albums the better for both groups. Dead can dance live albums are really good. no squealing. they sound like studio albums.

Also I am not sure why this is, but nobody mentioned Bjork. She is another atypical singer with great music. One of the best female artists around. Homogenic and vespertine are the best albums.
jerryo
If you have never heard "Rokia Traore", then you must; especially her album "Bowmboi". You will have never heard anything like it and the sound is fantastic. www.rokiatraore.net
john blackburn
Theres an Australian band called The Waifs who have some nice female vocals on them. Fine musicians too.
gareth
Hi,
If you try Portishead and you like it then I would highly recommend Massive Atack up until the Mezzanine album, you could also try Tricky. All these are from Bristol and have their distinct laid-back sounds.
David Bowies' Changes collection is a great listen. You could try Louise Attaque and Tarmac from France, excellent. If you like these then Noir Désir is excellent also.
If you like a nice crisp relaxing jazzy/latino feel then get Rivancha del Tango by the Gotan Project, nice modern electronic twist, cool.

Thanks
Gareth
PeteMcK
I'll second the Waifs, latest CD is great.

If you like 'World' Music, try Cesaria Evora, fantastic singer from the Cape Verde Islands, her clarinet player is amazing too...

Hi,

Sy is on the money about Joni Mitchell, especially Heijera!

I also second the Roches. Fripp played on "The Hammond Song." Listen to that and a few onthers here: http://www.myspace.com/theroches Suzzy is married to Louden Wainright III. He is also very talented and entertaining.

Look through Bonnie Raitt's catalog. You won't believe how good she has always been. Here's one of her early greats: http://video.google.com/videoplay?d...earch&plindex=0

And one more:http://video.google.com/videoplay?d...earch&plindex=0

Here's another great one that slipped between the crack, Nicky Holland. Look at her two discs: http://video.google.com/videoplay?d...earch&plindex=0

Oh, and Anniie Lennox, Diva is truly a great one!

I'll see what else I can think of! Enjoy!

Lucinda Williams - "Essence" is a well recorded album. i would not characterize it as uplifting.

...female vocals:

Throwing Muses: 'The Real Ramona'
Dead Can Dance: 'Toward the Within' (Live album but excellent. Otherwise try 'Into the Labyrinth'.
Cocteau Twins: Treasure, Victorialand, Blue Bell Knoll, Heaven or Las Vegas.

:)
Zero Cool
Milla Jovovich - The Divine Comedy. Extremely well recorded. 3d imaging. clean clear vocals. great bass.

Grace Jones - Slave to the Rythm. Track 7, be very careful. subsonics down around 5-7hz low in level and most players don't even go down that low but they are there! awesome stereo FX and dynamics.

Dresden Dolls - Girl Anacronism - Different.

Totally agree!!! In fact, you were the reason why I began listening to her when you mentioned it in a thread. Thank you!

Lura - Saw here live at my university and fell in love...Portuguese lyrics in this one....http://www.amazon.com/MBem-di-Fora-Lura/dp/B000N60H3Q

Few others that have already mentioned, like Norah Jones, Diana Krall, etc are great! Happy listening!

Check out Imogen Heap... you'll be glad you did. "Hide and Seek" is top-notch.

Bjork's Medulla is an acquired taste... but pure genius!

Raw and honest... Brandi Carlile's vocals on "The Story" make my skin crawl (in a good way).

Speaking of "The Story"... that's a great girl-group of yesteryear. "So Much Mine" is just good stuff.

Listen through the Liz Phair or P.J. Harvey catalogues and you'll see two artists that just get so much better with every album.

And, of course, if you're not familiar with Aimee Mann... you should be!

First of all, go to LastFM.com and install their software. It's not adwarised and it is amazing. You give it a tag or artist name and it'll watch what you're playing and shape a streaming music station to your favourites, so you hear lots of new sounds. It also lets you add friends, see what you and they are listening to most, recommendations for the day, week, whatever, statistics of plays and notes when artists you like will be playing nearby.

If you like electronic, trip hop, experimental music try;

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=coPcRW1Xm2g (the rest of auchtre isn't amazing)

Also;

Platenterium by plastikman
U-zig
Piano player Hata by Wagon Christ
Aphex Twin (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1P3Wc-37pC4 <--- excessive bad language at start of video for 3:55 before track starts)

Isobel & All Is Full of Love by Bejork are along a similar theme but more commercial sounding.

You won't find a lot of that on the net for free since it's not very mainstream. But you can use the tags in LastFM and you'll find a lot of none shelf music on there.

I can probably send you a few of these tracks if you like that style. Theoretically copyright infringement, but if it's only one or two it may inspire you to get the rest.
