What do you have now? It may not be as bad as you think, or can be improved.
I got a preamp I was sure should sound better than my older ones. I was disappointed. (list on the new one was serveral thousand K $).

| Have Cambridge Audio C500, been a good servant.Bought Electrcompaniet AW100 power amp,heard with matching preamp.Not sure C500 quite as good .Would balanced XLR output accout for the difference?Regards Ian |

Hi Ian,
You may have extra gain on the XLR outs. Depends on how they designed it.
I am not familiar with your C500. It may have some improvements that can be made. There may be some "tired" supply caps as well.
