Just wanted to come toot my own horn, and say thanks for all the good info on this site. I mostly lurk and search the forums since this has been my first project and don't have a lot to contribute (yet?). Anyway, this is what I ended up with:
Sealed 14.25"(cubed) internal volume (47.5liters) MDF
Peerless XXLS 830845 12" Driver
Rhythmik Audio A370-SE plate amp.
Got the cool spikey feet and nifty hex screws to "trick it out"
Covered all internal MDF surfaces with 1" quilt batting (like polyfill, but in sheets)
Finished with semi-gloss black to match my other speakers (boring, but my wife wanted them to match, and didn't want me to spend more money on veneer :))
I have no real test equipment except a sound pressure meter, so I equalized all my speakers with a pink noise generator and went to work playing movies and music to impress myself (my wife just rolls her eyes :) Master and Commander is frickin cool, and there are a few songs that I've listened to so far and thought 'wow, I didn't relize I was missing so much on the low end.'

Not sure what method you are talking about. Like sticking some granite or concrete underneath or something?
Currently it has 2 inch spikes that pretty much pierce the carpet and hit the sub-floor.

Working for the largest US plasma+lcd distributor has it's benefits. It's a scratch+dent model, so instead of really damn expensive, it was just pretty much damn expensive :)

I didn't really have any drawings to go by. I just made a bunch of ~16" squares out of 3/4" MDF and glued them together.
The speaker cutout was made by a Jasper Jig and my new router (Happy birthday to me!!!). The amp cutout I made with a jigsaw.
Internally I hotglued quilt batting to all the exposed MDF surfaces. |
