Started with an old magnet from a ribbon mic so its only 1/4" wide. the ribbon is finest KitKat wrapper and I'm quite pleased with the result, playing full range it sound pretty good from about 300Hz up (ribbon being driver directly from an amp).

how do I go about getting higher SPL, bigger ribbon? which means new magnets.

How are you driving the ribbon? With a transformer or directly?
Puggie
Directly off a A&R (old Arcam) A60, it claims to only be 8Ohm stable but isn't overheating (the speaker outs are fused too).

I need to look into transformers next.

pretty much nothing, well under an ohm, its a bit of thin aluminium foil, 1/4"X2 1/2".
