TDA2050 parallel. HELP! - Click HERE for Original Thread
Matthewong
Right now I'm facing a very serious problem of my power amp using TDA2050 in parallel configuration. My power amp i.c. keep burning. I've changed 6 pcs of TDA2050 and the problem still the same. First I thought that I might using a too small heatsink for 4 pcs od TDA2050, after that I changed to a bigger one, but the problem still the same, blown. After that I changed the zobel network resistor to 4.7ohm, but the i.cs still blown. Can anyone tell me how to do? I followed the circuit diagram given by ST Electronic, what I modified is make it to parallel using 2 0.1ohm resistors in each output and the zobel network after the 2 0.1 ohm resistor. HELP!

Start by changing the current sharing resistors from 0R1 to 1R, then you stand a chance of finding out what is happening without smoke.

0R1 is too low anyway, I would use 0R22 in a design.

Is this chip safe paralleled? When there is an overload one chip will always limit first and the other will then drive the disabled output. Most ICs are only specified with short to ground. National seem to have got this right.

Hello Matthewong,

I already tested with 4 tda2050 ( Bridge parallel ).
I used BPA200 circuit design. ( from national ).
I think you can parallel with that design.

seems like ur given URL has some problem there, can't find the page.

One more thing, I have tested both bridged parallel and parallel only. But the conclusion I have got was parallel only configuration was the sound more control than the bridged parallel configuration. What do you guy think? Need some recommendation here.

I suspect that the high quality of the simple chip amps comes from just how easy it is to get the pcb layout right with proper dcoupling and routing of power and ground.

By the time you have expanded to a bridged and paralleled solution, correct layout is not so easy.
