I need a circuit or a technique for detecting if an electret mic or dynamic mic is connected to the amp input to make appropriate gain adjustments. I thought about sensing the voltage and using comparators to control switches across gain resistors. Any ideas?

What's wrong with a volume control?.

The outputs from microphones tend to be fairly similar, and the normal input controls do all that's required.

What are you trying to do?.
