I see a red door and I want it painted black
No colors anymore I want them to turn black
I see the girls walk by dressed in their summer clothes
I have to turn my head until my darkness goes
I see a line of cars and they're all painted black
With flowers and my love both never to come back
I see people turn their heads and quickly look away
Like a new born baby it just happens ev'ry day
I look inside myself and see my heart is black
I see my red door and it has been painted black
Maybe then I'll fade away and not have to face the facts
It's not easy facin' up when your whole world is black
No more will my green sea go turn a deeper blue
I could not foresee this thing happening to you
If I look hard enough into the settin' sun
My love will laugh with me before the mornin' comes
I see a red door and I want it painted black
No colors anymore I want them to turn black
I see the girls walk by dressed in their summer clothes
I have to turn my head until my darkness goes
Hmm, hmm, hmm,...
I wanna see it painted, painted black
Black as night, black as coal
I wanna see the sun blotted out from the sky
I wanna see it painted, painted, painted, painted black
Yeah! |

| My first rock album......... |
|
|
| Peter Daniel |
This is my first rock album;)
Before Nirvana, before the Misfits, before the Clash, the Sex Pistols, the Ramones and the rest of the so-called first wave of punk rock, the Stooges originally used thrashy rock and roll to epitomize average young angst. It not an overestimation to say that every distressed grunge rocker, raging metal head and disenfranchised punk can trace his or her roots back to the Stooges' eponymous debut, an album that was woefully misplaced in the idealistic, flower power era. With the exception of the faulty artrork endeavor, "We Will Fall," every moment of the 1969 LP surges with the rage of pent-up, unruly youngsters. Lead singer, Iggy Pop, takes the role of a ...everyman, tunelessly wailing about awkward sex drive ("Not Right" "Real Cool Time"), youthful apathy ("No Fun," the pounding, perfect anthem "1969") and misplaced passion ("Ann" "I Wanna Be Your Dog," which is likely the most frighteningly forceful song of devotion ever recorded). The band backs his idiosyncratic frenzy with thumping drumbeats; sling-shotting, quasi-psychedelic guitar riffs and a generally, delightfully rough sound. This was an approach and a sound so revolutionary that it reverberated through the Woodstock era, inspired the countless disenfranchised youths who became the punk movement in the mid-seventies and continues to echo today. True, bitter teens and twenty-somethings would have likely used music as an outlet even without the Stooges. But Iggy and company should be accredited for founding the style by which so many of them did. |
|
|
| Peter Daniel |
But my real adventure in rock started with this album.;)
As the year 1977 and its musical epiphanies become but a distant memory for some, it makes it easier to judge the musical merits of its respective bands from a long-term perspective, and if there's any disc from the period that seems to get better with age, it's the Damned's debut. Long-considered The Band Least Likely, or at best a footnote to the UK punk explosion, looking back, their dedication to truly anarchic music and their exhuberant fandom for high-energy rock'n'roll - as opposed to social revolution and politics - certainly makes their records a whole lot more enjoyable to listen to than several of their compadres from the era.
As opposed to the Sex Pistols, Clash and the Buzzcocks, the Damned sounded American more than British, their music being a kind of MC5/Stooges/NY Dolls/"Nuggets" (and, yes, T-Rex) hybrid that, in hindisght, proved to be more influential on American Hardcore (especially the LA and DC scenes) than the more infamous Sex Pistols or Clash.
Or putting it simply, from a basic perspective of high-energy punk rock with the eternal themes of trash, love and teenage dreams, this record is near unbeatable. EVERY song here could've made a killer single. It's something you'll probably never read about in any of the "official" books on UK punk, but the Damned made possibly the best UK punk album of 1977. Amen to that! |

| I was 16 I think, and laying in bed on a school day pretending to be sick. Mum (we don't have moms here BTW) was going out shopping and wanted to know if there was anything she could get for me. Opportunity! Brought back this most raucous Slade Alive LP. Made that 13 watt per channel Playmaster 136 and Plessey 10" C100's & Philips dome tweeters in 2.5 cu ft bass reflex boxes (me and dad built in 1973) fairly hammer. She still reminds me of the day when she caught me sitting on the floor in the corner with both speakers facing in toward me, each touching an adjacent wall and separated by only enough room to poke my legs out, and a picnic table across the top of the speakers above my head to keep the sound in. I had live concert sound levels going there.:) you could really feel the drum beats on your chest. she still reminds me of it 27 years later. BTW, I can ony hear to 9.5 kHz now. :bawling: |

In 1980 at the end of my last years work, I took a Greyhound bus from Brisbane to Perth for my first holidays.
Whilst in Perth I met a beautiful hot babe (toes to nose suntan ;) ) who had just come back from the US, and told me of a great new movie called the Blues Brothers.
A week later I was back home and haunting my local import/second hand record shop and came across a new import copy of the The Blues Brothers Soundtrack, so I promptly bought it.
As soon as I got home I put it on the turntable, and instantly loved it.
So did all of my friends, who all wrestled tape copies (no cd-burners then) out of me.
Before long there was a whole bunch of friends listening to this classic.
About 10 months later, the film was released here, and we got to understand the record better.
That record was a favorite at many parties until a girlfriend stepped back and put a stiletto heel through it  .
Nowadays I have the cd version, but it ain't quite the same.

Dave and Peter,
Another matter, i have observed "A is better than B" statements without the obligatory IMO tag on it here, more than once. I am feeling tense about that.
When i opened this music board, this was one of the things robbing my sleep: will members start comparative ranking and scratch opponent's eyes out on next strike? Because i have observed such on other forum boards.
Now i find i myself feel offended by | quote: | Originally posted by fdegrove Uriah Heep on the other hand,ah, much better than Peep Durple:D
| .
For my taste, nothing i know from Uriah Heep is coming near to the Deep Purple "Made in Japan" stuff. But that's only my taste, i never would dare to make such a general statement and i am quite ****ed, reading it.
All,
Hmmmm, my 1st rock album was probably something from StatusQuo, i do not even remember the name. My whole school class listened to it, it was required to be into Status Quo to be socially acceptable.
They wore off fast for me. I listened to Rock when being together with people listneing Rock but when i left those groups, the music left me.
Later, i began to selectively look for Rock albums suiting my taste; did not find many. I would name two albums being my 1st Rock albums as a conscious Rock listener:
one from Jimi Hendrix, with "Little Wing" and "Red House" on it and also "The Queen", a fancy version :D..of the British National Anthem ...
the other one is "Live Cream Vol.2" with Eric Clapton, Jack Bruce, Ginger Baker.
Both albums do not wear off for me up to today. I regularly listen to them. And since then, i buy anything from The Cream and from Jimi Hendrix i can lay my hands on. |

I came home with Floyd "The Wall", INXS "Kick", ACDC "Back in Black", Die Aerzte "Nach uns Das Sinnflut (live)", Toten Hosen "Bis Zum Bitteren Ende (live)" and Toten Hosen "Ein Keines Bischen Horrorshau". Thanks to Deiter (my exchange host) for my next birthday I had Zappa's "Joes Garage" on my wants list. (Even more amazingly my folks came through with the goods!)
It was alll downhill from there in more ways than one. While in Merry Deutschland I got dragged though a coup-e of hifi stores on a buying mission for Deiter's dad and at the time would have sworn that I couldn't pick the difference between totally different systems, let alone differing cables, catridges, turntables, amps etc. This hifi thingy is a learned skill you know. Of course from the first time you hear yourself talking about a recording you know well and say;
"Wow, I never heard THAT before." you're done for.
Of course the other downhill apsect came in two letters
CD
My vinyl sat unloved for all the 90's and it was only this year that I turned back to the dark (plastic) side.
"You can take my tunrtable when you prise it out of my cold dead hands!"
Drew
(All donations to a redeemed and repentant vinyl ignorer gratefully appreciated) |

Dave and Peter,
Another matter, i have observed "A is better than B" statements without the obligatory IMO tag on it here, more than once. I am feeling tense about that.

[B]Dear Mr Planet 10. I've been seeking decent copies of Night at the Opera, Jazz, The Works, Sheer Heart Attack and to a lesser extent Innuendo, Miracle and Kind of Magic for a while now.
(of course postage to Australia is a paint in the butt) Are they up for offers? |
I'll give Dice 1st crack, but yes, the offer is open. I've been scooping up old boxes of records at 0-50 cents each in the hopes of skimming off the top 10%. If i can find a good home for the good dups i'm happy.

Dave and Peter,
I was quite serious about that point.
Could become rule#6:
Music board:
Comparative ranking with the IMO tag is ticklish and not recommended.
Comparative ranking without the IMO tag is considered to be equivalent to name calling.
I found back to a Beethoven board i once left. On of the members there, in fact the main deer, does comparative ranking all the time which is quite an embarrassment and a deterioation of the discussions IMO. |

In my opinion IMO means in my opinion.
