tuner for my HDTV monitor - Click HERE for Original Thread

I just invested in a 51-inch Magnavox HDTV....great picture. Now I can't get the kids to do anything.

This unit has only the NTSC tuner built in. Is it possible to DIY a ATSC Tuner for this unit that could be connected thru the Component video inputs?

Anyone with ideas or advice?

actually the cheapest way to go is to just buy an atsc tuner box. if you have an htpc it would be cheaper to just add a tuner to it. keep in mind that you can only pick up ota hdtv with either of these. with a atsc+qam tuner you *may* be able to get unencrypted HD over cable. The govt. was asleep at the switch when they let the cable industry use a different standard imo.

Thanks for your response.....I've seen some Brand X models at Wally World for a couple of hundred bucks.

I just wanted to come up with a project the wife would think is useful.....the house is full of amplifiers already!

Superdaveumo (his name here) posted on the diyprojectorcompany forums about this ATSC OTA/Clear-QAM tuner, which he seemed enthused about :

It's only $89, does ATSC HDTV signals from either broadcasts or unencrypted cable HDTV broadcasts, and also has a slew of outputs (including HDMI and component outputs. I'm considering getting it, since it's so cheap.
