Searching for a new or old part online is a pain in the a&& these days.
What is the deal with all these pseudo sites with a list of every part# in the universe?? Are they just Cookie machines?
eg.:
LoadParts
HKinventory
4star
etc.......
Do you guys have any tips in regards to searching for old parts? (I bought a load of 'vintage' resistors, and am trying catagorize them, and decipher their value codes.)

like:

Speaking of google search.
I get this error that my PC is infected by something.
But I have tested using several spyware detectors, and they do not find anything.
I also use Norton Anti-Virus with scheduled virus search.| quote: | We're sorry...

This happens for example when search for:
php audio
First result page is alright,
but when I click at 'Page 2' at bottom to see more results,
then I get that message above.
A possible explaination is the 'php'
triggers a forbidden script saftey.
But this is something new. Have not seen this problem before in same situation. |

I don't know what is up with the pages with lots of part numbers and nothing else, but it is certainly annoying. However, even those can be of limited usefulness, giving an occasional 'other way' to look.
I have had the best results using Google by getting as good a part number as I can and then putting a space and .pdf after that.
random example with made-up numbers: part is to-220 and marked only K1023. Search for that maybe but I would start with
2SK1023 .pdf
if I think it's a transistor
1N for diodes etc. There are some places like chipdocs that have what you want some times but you have to pay for it to get the whole datasheet. I find that even they can be helpful. They give you a blurry image of the first page, but that can give you things like a manufacturer's logo or maybe even a keyword from the title or body of the datasheet to search with. Sometimes also it helps to list the package (to-92 etc.) in as a keyword. If it still gives you "500 channels of nothing" then try narrowing the results to more-likely candidates by typing in Amps or Volts or any known parameters of the device (and/or variants of same) as additional keywords.
Sometimes 8billion or whatever pages is too much and sometimes not enough but there is very rarely a datasheet that nobody has.

| If find it helpfull to use the googles cache if I can as search terms get highlighted then. |

Now I know some of you more "experienced" posters on this forum ..don't want to hear this but, ....DIYAudio forums is often the best bet when needing info not found elswhere.
I know, I know,..people must do a web-search first, :att'n: and use the "search button" here as well, before posting a Q.
Have you noticed how MANY Q's are simple questions about parts?
Perhaps there should be a "Parts Database" here, in the form of links, and possibly people could volenteer their expertise toward a parts knowledgebase.

...and while I'm in constructive critisism mode, the "search" function here should highlight the searched words.....I can't find anything in a 130 post thread otherwise.
I have been using Google to search here, typed as, (no brakets):

Entered this way it will only search this site.
... then use cache for the results....(then things are highlighted).
