SY
What with the increase in traffic and the normal desire for new blood, we're adding a couple of new moderators to the staff here. First up is anatech. Chis is yet another Canadian, so expect that you'll be required to wear a toque, eat back bacon, and drink Molsons while posting when he's around.
Cal Weldon
Welcome aboard Chris. Great to have another Canadian here. You've been such a help so far and now that you're official, you can start receiving the same pay we do. What's that? No, I don't know how much 'cause I haven't received my first cheque yet. You know how slow surface mail is.

Cal

Hi guys,

Well since the hours double I guess I better double your pay also. Don't think you'll notice much difference though since nothing x 2 = nothing.

Arrrrgggghhh! :xeye: Now I want to delete my post :smash:

Poutine? Bleeeuuurrrgh. Maudite, that's different.

One of the Really Good things about Santa Cruz is La Fin Du Monde at the local grocery store. Yum yum.

Cheers,
Francois.

Congratulations!

I just hope it doesn't get in the way of your being one of the most knowledgable and helpful people on the forum. :)

:xeye: what's that on my nose?
anatech
Hi mpmarino,
I know what that is! :dead:

I'm just as knowledgable as you are, I just talk more! ;) Thanks though.

Congrats on your appointment Chris. I guess when they hired you they knew that Canadian Moderators aren't allowed to carry guns. You are a brave soul! :D
anatech
Hi Rob,
But, I have so many to choose from. That is if Mr. Martin loses the election:bawling:

Thanks.

Another Canadian?? Funny country, Canada. When I was over there they had signs all over the place: "Drink Canada Dry". I gave it a try, but finally my wife made me stop it. She said it would kill me before I made it. Sigh.
Anyway, welcome, we'll be watching you too, you know!;)

Hi Chris congrts my friend youve made all repairmen proud

good luck with troubleshooting members ;)
anatech
Hi Jan,
You were supposed to mix that stuff with whiskey. It's self limiting then. Why do you think Canadians don't complain much?

Now that winter is here we do our best to stay inside. I probably won't see another Canadian 'till spring. It is warm enough for it to snow today.

Cal - don't say a word. You're likely outside enjoying the weather.

-Chris
janneman
Sorry, you don't get it... Drink Canada dry, as in: no more liquid, dry, devoid of liquid, empty, ehhh...;)

Jan Didden
anatech
Hi Jan,
I got it. Mix pop with alcohol and you can only drink so much. Makes you go to sleep. :drunk: ;)

I like your joke Jan ;)

It was quite funny :D

And one more person has joined the moderation crew. I'm delighted and honored that ray_moth has been kind enough to grab a mop, a bucket, and a billy club.
Cal Weldon
Three cheers for billy club Ray. Thank you for joining the group.

Actually I didn't think that one up, reportedly that was what Dean Martin said when a reporter in Canada asked him why he was drunk on stage, most of the time.

Another Dean Martin quip:

"I'm on a Whisky diet. Last week alone I lost four days!"

pop = soda = soft drink

It's one of those "marker" words which allow you to determine which part of North America the speaker comes from. (some others are "sack" versus "bag," "roll" versus "bun"...)

Right. All very confusing. I mean, how can you even understand a country where they drive in the Parkway and park in the driveway...

good humour at last.(from Jan):D
SY
If you drive on a parkway, you're probably from New Jersey or New York. A Californian drives on the freeway.
quasi
A freeway where yu have to pay a toll?
SY
Fortunately, we only pay tolls for bridges and one or two sections of road in Southern California- tollways.
anatech
Hi All,
A hearty welcome Ray! Now we can practice synchronized mopping. :D

Jan,
Sorry. Pop = soda I drive on highways and parkways (odd to be sure) and park in a driveway (someone has to explain that one to me)

Bas,
We marry our female companionship sometimes. They are called wives or girlfriends . ;) That might be more expensive in the end, but I don't have to make any more decisions! :clown:

SY,
You pay a toll for me????:xeye: (last name = bridge) :D Marker words are neat to study. You can tell many things from that and spelling.

-Chris - thanks for the kind wishes to everyone.

freeway.no toll highway?
SY
California is quite wonderful. That is indeed how the term "freeway" originated.
peranders
An another funny thing: In Yorkshire in England they say "anyroad" instead of anyway. I have also heard "roadwise".

A swedish thing even weirder.

200 km of Stockholm, in Gävle the say "Hej då" when they mean "hello".

"Hej då" is the same as Good bye.
sagarverma
how do u choose new moderator?what is crieteria?
SY
It's a deep dark secret.

Here's a few insights:

1. Need. Do we need more help? I like to have about 10-12 active moderators at any given time. As people go through cycles and we lose their services, we fill in with new blood.

2. Willingness. Moderators are unpaid. There's no particular prestige attached to it, it's more of a janitor/bouncer role. It takes time and you regularly get abused in public or via email. Most people we ask politely say no.

3. Competence. Basic technical competence is needed, but moderators are NOT chosen for outstanding technical abilities. Personality and nature of interactions with other members are more important than understanding the ins and outs of Laplace transforms.

4. Geography. We want to be spread out so that there's more-or-less 24 hour coverage. This also helps in understanding cultural issues.

In Canada those are beer and women.

Either that or something green in the back of the fridge.

He's the hungry duck that came visiting when I was having lunch with my parents on the patio at the golf course. He was the only white one among many other regular coloured mallard ducklings. A shining star if you will.

SY forgot one thing when he made that list. Generally speaking if someone asks to become a mod they will be turned away.
