looking for some advice here please...
my toroid outputs 40V, the voltage coming out of the psu to preamp is approx 14V, the cap just prior to exit of psu is rated at 16V. All the caps in the pre and power sections of the amp (integrated amp) are rated at 63V. Surely 63V is overkill, as without a stepup transformer the voltage will never be any greater than 14V anywhere post psu, or am I being stupid?
Basic question is, when replacing pre and power amp caps do I have to do like for like voltage rating wise, or can I use 16V (or thereabouts) everywhere. When measuring the voltage across the cap at power amp signal entry it came out at 0.3V, across a cap rated at 63V....

Hi,
I cannot work out which voltages you are measuring from your description.
The integrated amplifier is very unlikely to be operating on +-14Vdc. Much more likely to be between +-35Vdc and +-50Vdc.
Your 40 Volt toroid, is that 40Vac or 40Vdc?
In answer to your last Q, replace the caps with like for like until you have acquired the knowledge to allow safe alternatives to be identified and substituted.
