Can someone recommed a good (and cheap) transmitter/receiver (either RF or IR) chip pair that is good for DIY remote controls (i.e. can transmit across a room)?

The appear to be 8-pin PIC microcontrollers that are pre-programmed with their custom firmware to encode/decode IR signals (and sold at a profit). They have other types too, just browse around.

Check out Holtek, or consult my PIC Tutorials to make your own - but the Holtek encoders/decoders are cheaper than PIC's!.
